    Hello,

I have a 220l reef octopus fish tank with a reef octopus 2000 pump for circulation. I have recently added a Resun CL280 chiller to the set-up and the following has happened:
    - Pump is now making a noise. It does not make a noise if I remove the hose taking water to the chiller
    - Overall water flow back to the tank is not as strong.

    Question:
    - Do I need a chiller with higher flow capability?
    - Do I need a biger pump to get high flow back to the tank
    - Do I need a smaller pump to match the CL280's flow capability.

Any help/suggestions on the above will be welcomed

    Thanks
    Antoine

what is the flow rate on the reef octopus 2000 pump?

Its quite unlikely that your flow rate is too high for the chiller if your return flow has slowed down visibly.

    Re: Pump and chiller combinations

You have a back flow problem with your pump. This is due to the fact that when you connect your pump outlet to your chiller inlet and the chiller outlet to the return, the water flow goes to your chiller and the flow rate is too high for your chiller resulting in backflow.

What you need to do is to tee off the outlet of your pump to your chiller and return pipe and this will reduce the flow of water through your chiller by 50%. If this still results in backflow, then install a ball valve on the water flow to your chiller and restrict the flow rate to your chiller further.

    Re: Pump and chiller combinations

Thanks to fuzzy and teebs for their responses - most helpful. I bought a smaller 1000lph pump to run the chiller on loopback into the sump. Water temp has been maintained and backflow problem on the 2000lph pump is no longer a problem. Rock is happy and water quality is looking really good - should be able to add fish in soon.
