I am currently using a second hand chiller which used to be a marine chiller. Before adding to your aquarium, recommend heavy flushing through and against the flow of water. Then test with cheap fishes and let it run for weeks before you are safe to use it on ur beloved fishes/shrimps. That's what I did and my crses are doing fine. GoodLuck!

P.s. better to look for freshwater chillers to safe trouble. haha.. But if you love the hands on, then go for it..

It's not like there is something poisonous in seawater. It's just salt and trace elements, I don't understand why people all have this misconception
that saltwater equipment is deadly to freshwater setups and vice versa.

Just make sure to flush the chiller if it hasn't been used in awhile to clear out any standing water or debris from the chiller reservoir.

If the chiller was just disconnected from a working system I would just pour out the saltwater and hook it up straight away.

In fact it's probably even better that you're using a marine chiller.

Any parasites, algal spores or microorganisms that might be transferred from a contaminated FW tank will not be present.

thank you thank you, i go get it before too late, never use before chiller just want to try it thats all.....

hope my plants and shrimps loves it, will take note the growth of all plants in it, also the noise level, i reckon the heat generated may be a problem.

i wonder the electric will cost how high???? maybe another $50 per month??

    Hi bro...
Plants growth..can't comment...but for shrimp....( CRS, etc ), they will love it.....
For the heat generated....is depend how often the chiller kicks in....
which will impact to the electric bill.

Depending on your tank size, ambient temperature and set temperature the bill will vary.

Typically, if you're using it in a 2ft tank set at 25C, in an area that is not incredibly hot, ensure your pump or canister has enough flow rate for your chiller and ensure the chiller is well ventilated from both the front and back, it should not add more than $20.00 to your monthly power bill.

Re: Marine chiller can use in fresh water?

Got my 2nd hand chiller used in marine by the previous owner. Found out that inside the chiller reactor got some reef or coral deposits.

Have tried few times to flush with water but the coral/reef still sticking in the reactor. I understand that vinegar can dissolved or loosen it. But question is the vinegar will cause corrosion of my reactor or not?

For your info, the chiller is using titanium heat exchange materials (artica/daeil).

Hi I just got a second hand marine chiller from a bro here. What is the best way to flush it?

I understand using water and vinegar will do the job. Perhaps any new discovered method.

    Any recommendations is welcome
