Thanks! could u recommend me some shops to go to? im afraid of those random shops and as a beginner and they'll rip u off by asking u to buy this buy that and stuff. ahah thanks
don't think you can get any of those at any shop
will have to source in forum for 2nd hand
as for common zoa and mushroom, ah beng(pasir ris) or coralfarm(lim chu kang)
ah beng sell fish cheaper than coralfarm, but coralfarm fish are more healthier
you can purchase tank, filter, live rocks & sand and start cycling
the process takes at least 2 weeks, best is up to a month
concurrently, you do more reading and decide which fish to keep
happy reefing
thanks alot. well i dont mind buying bit by bit for now. im thinking of keeping a lion fish but im not sure what other species goes along with it. are there any shops i can go take a look and ask for advice? im living in toa payoh. i saw a shop called sealife at balestier online but not sure if it's still there.
Lion fish isn't a very good beginner fish to start, and it won't go well with some coral too. So I guess you need to read up quite a fair bit on this aspect. I would suggest you start look through some of the recommendation as mentioned in liveaquaria there are some guidelines, just take information with a pinch of salt.
Starting a budget marine can also be fun too, I did it that way and yes, with a 2ft tank and low end equipments. But do note what you wish to add in to ensure they dun overload the low end equipments. You can slowly upgrade along the way. Lots of reading helps.
Have fun reefing.
ahh how much did ur whole setup cost though? did u use a canister or an undergravel filter? cost i went down to sealife at balestier and they recommended that i get a canister to prevent too much hassle in future
1. 2ft Tank x 2 (1 main tank 2x1x1.5ft with blue stick on backing, 1 sump tank 2x1x1.2ft with 3 partition) $10 - price lowered. Main tank is very well made with clear glass

If your tank size is only 2 ft, the Lion fish is not suitable for you. Please note, this is a predator fish. It will eat any fish that will fit into its mouth. You will have better success if you stick to small fish. Do a search on the Internet for nano fish.
If I were you, I had avoid the canister filter. Maintenance is a real hassle. I suggest you use a hob filter. BTW, ungravel filter is more suitable for freshwater aquarium.
If you do not have a sump, the pump to feed the Weipro skimmer will have to be in your 2 ft tank. This is downright ugly. It will be neater if you use a hob skimmer. I have a spare Rio Nano skimmer. I can sell if you are interested. PM for the price.
One last point, if you do have a chiller, the temperature in your tank will be between 29 C and 32 C most of the time. At this stage, I will not advise you to get a chiller. You can get a small fan to blow at the water surface. This will bring the temperature down by 1 to 2 degrees. Unfortunately, you will have to contend with water evaporation. Do look for fish that can survive in this temperature range.
The secret to a successful marine tank is patience and plenty of reading.
May the force be with you.
I honestly don't know how much my setup cost, as most are "recycled" from my freshwater setup.
Here's my initial setup (initial as it's no long just this)
- Nisso 2ft tank (reused)
- canister filter (reused Fluval 304)
- Weipro 2011 skimmer (bought 2nd hand)
- Lights (reused)
- Sand and rocks from a fellow reefer.
- Salt and miscellaneous stuff, just buy it.
Going for a FOWLR setup would be a good start and you would not need as much accessories or additives to begin. Good live rocks will act as good bio-media, so you won't require that much bio-media.
Of course, it would be better to utilise a sump setup so that you will have a lot more water to maintain the fluctuation in parameter so as to stabalise the setup. That will help you move all the unsightly equipment away from the main tank.
ok i just bought a 2x1.5x1.5 tank yesterday.. right now im planning to use a sump tank. still looking for ppl selling off their ones. but my tank isnt drilled so is using an overflow box reliable?
you can try SRC forum for more details of local fish shop
Go for a DIY overflow, if you are a little savvy with construction.
I did mine with the help of some info I have found (now I can't find the link....hmm..)
That will temporarily ease your mind off drilling the tank
