    Hi all,

I'm trying to take my aquarium hobby a bit more seriously so I'm setting up a new tank. I was wondering, for the bottom layer of substrate - the sort that plants need for nutrients etc. what is a good buy? Preferably not too expensive too.

Also, do I need to put a netting between the bottom layer substrate and top level gravel?

    Thanks for your help

    MY

    Hi there,
I'm a beginner myself, but to save the hassle i would go with ADA Aquasoil. But they are a little expensive. Another alternative might be GEX soil.

I got the gex, thanks. About RM 34. Now letting the water settle before I continue.

Hi which type of GEX soil did u buy? And how was it? Good?

Also, why is there a need for a top layer gravel? Won't the top layer be disrupted every time we try to add items to the soil?

Also new here, wanna learn more.

To be honest, I didn't understand the Japanese on the soil, so I asked the guy, and bought the one he said was suitable for planting. It's the green packet. Haha. I'm new too.

The top layer is usually rougher gravel so the roots can firmly hang on to. The bottom substrate is to ensure long term nutrients for the plants.
