    Hi to all,

juz setup a new 1ft abt 27litres with 15watt arcadia FL and small external filter. Find out that juz the following day, there are lot of jelly like transparent substance sticking on my plants n driftwood. Plants are java fern, xmoss and nana. Driftwood boiled n soak overnite, gravel also wash. Haven test for kH, ph nor ammonia as haven put fish inside yet. Anyone can help ? I already changed 80%-90% water in the past two days but still the jelly like substance appear after water change the next day.

I have the same problem too. Appears all over the wood I have in my tank.
Anybody knows what it is and is it detrimental to fish?

Same here! In my case, it was the rotting driftwood. Maybe you can remove the wood and scrub it.

    Cheers!

Nope don't think so. Snail eggs don't appear overnight after boiling and scrubbing away. Anyway the jelly like substance seem to be a characteristic of newly started tanks with driftwood. I had the same experience myself, the stuff is white and slimy, grows on my wood. Boiling doesn't help, as mentioned. Then i read on this website selling driftwood that it's a fungus that's not harmful to fishes at all. Just leave it alone and it will disappear after your plants and bacteria take over the tank. True enough mine disappeared overnight just as fast as it did appear [:]

    Hi!

Thanks for the reply. Did a search on google with "driftwood fungus" and it is heartening to know that it is not harmful and will disappear after a while.

i think could be due to untreated driftwood, then maybe its the sap from the driftwood?

Don't worry dude last time mine also like that. My java moss on the wood got covered by the fungus also. You just need to wait for the bacteria colony to get established. Maybe you can try adding some commercial bacteria to speed things up a bit. This is the website i found that eased my worry the last time take a look at the last paragraph.

Just discovered today that the majority of the fungus I had growing on my wood decoration has disappeared. Probably due to a combination of the tank cycling and the presence of 3 Yamato shrimps and 1 white corydoras

Don't worry. They will disappear in 3 days once you add in the shrimps and fish!

Like what yok said, just put in the shrimps and your bottom feeder and voila...the fungus will soon whittle away. Mine are nearly gone except at the extreme ends and hard-to-reach areas on the driftwood.

I give it another 1 week and it should all disappear.
