Hi all, just sharing some pictures of the Betta coccina gotten from Y618 earlier last month; and also to promote the wild betta hobby. They have coloured up and started flaring. Don't intend to try breeding them thouhg. Another beautiful species from the Coccina Complex.

The irids are beautiful, also have 2 red lines on the operculum. Different from burdigala in terms of dorsal spread and extent of irids.

A pair flaring. Male (left, longer and more tappered dorsal, more irids along fins and body, longer pelvic fins) and Female (right; plumber and can see egg spot from side view).

    Soil: ADA Amazonia II
    pH: 5.5
Bi-Weekly partial water changes to maintain the water quality.

    Diet: Tubifex/Daphnia/BBS (Frozen and Live)
    Cheers,

I wonder if we can still instill breeding while they are kept in a colony especially for bubble nester?

    Re: Betta coccina

Possible. That's how it is in the wild. But I guess you'd have to do away with the filter and have multiple sites for nests and for the males to draw out territorial boundaries. But with that many bettas in a tank, not having a filter isn't very wise unless you're really careful with your feeding and water change regimes.

Very nice photos and setup. They are beautiful fishes. Wonder why they're so affordable, could it be that they are still really abundant in the wild?

What filter do you use? Is it that strong that it would cause havoc if they do breed? I guess with bubblenesters, they would prefer very slow flowing water. Or maybe even still water.

    Re: Betta coccina

I'm using a sponge filter, the ones with curved tops that kind of function like HOFs, with water coming out instead of bubbles. Any filter would cause the water surface to vibrate in my opinion. In nature there will be twigs and growth of vegetation to block this, probably not in a tank. Yup, somehow they get induced when water is still and conditions are right.

    Re: Betta coccina

Hmmm, never heard of that filter...interesting. I use sponge filters for my channoides too...but I think they like water flowing cause when it's set too low, they do nothing. When it's set too fast, they panic. But when it is just "right" they get all worked up and breed. I've switched most of the tanks on the rack to just sponges...seem to work just fine. I think the difference with bubblenesters is their eggs are on the surface and probably somewhat more delicate. Interesting though. It's good to learn something new everyday.

You can see the major difference between Betta coccina from Jambi and Ayer Hitam.
Those from Ayer Hitam exhibit a dark green spot (something like B. brownorum) on the flank instead of green iridiscence patch.
