Hi fellows. I'm looking for a device to increase the flow in a 1.5-foot tank that currently is only supported by an Eden 501 external filter (outlet is an extended rainbar). I will prefer the device to have as little physical footprint in the tank as possible (the tank is already quite "crowded" as it is), have adjustable directional output & even more important, the inlet of this device (where the water gets sucked in) should be as "critter-safe" as possible. The reason I highlighted this is because previously I was using a Eheim Compact Pump (model: 300) & many a time smaller fishes from my previous tank were sucked onto the inlet "grilles" even when I didn't crank the flow-rate to the maximum.

On the other hand, is there something like an external pump that I can use to augment the Eden 501's flow-rate? That will probably do as well.

    Hi ralliart12

You may try sponge around the "grilles" or add cut to size sponge inside the "grilles" to reduce less strong suction current and casualty will be reduce.

    hope this will help you.
    cheers

But I suppose the resultant outflow will be reduced as well?

Not really at all, input still received the equivalent amount of water, and outflow is at the same time the identical amount. It is just the same and there is no difference at all. That why I recommend black sponge to insert inside of the grilles.

    hope this will help you.

Just to clarify, are you hoping to increase the flow rate for filtration purposes (1)? Or are you trying to increase the amount of current produced (2)?

If you are trying to achieve (1), then you could consider running your eden as a dummy, and using an external pump to run your filtration unit instead. I think you might have to remove the impeller from your eden though. You should not run both together as you'll force the impeller to rotate faster than the motor turns it, which might cause issues.

If you just want to achieve (2), then I would suggest removing the rainbar totally. That would increase the current produced. You will then be able to direct the current by pointing the outlet in whichever direction you please.

With regards to the inlet, I'm not sure if there's a commercial mesh (like the one from Gush) for your eden's size (which I think is 9mm). Perhaps as eddy has mentioned, you could employ the use of a sponge.

P.S. The eden filter is known to be quite weak as compared to other canisters. It was probably designed to work that way. Perhaps consider an upgrade as a viable alternative?

Vannel, think using a external pump not wise. May create more harm then help.

Let's see raliart's respond. IMO a 1.5 feet Eden 501 and alike are good enough. Else may have washing machine effect.

Appreciate the input. Actually, I am trying to get a Tunze Nanostream. Any idea where I can secure one locally (from stores) instead of ordering online?

Aquamarin and Reef Depot has the wavemaker you are looking for.

Every device that outputs current will need an intake. Additional grills, mesh or sponges will reduce out over time due to media clogging. Simple and fish/shrimp-safe, yet increase current? Get an air-stone.
