Gravel grain size matters too. Does the gravel affect the pH or other chemistry of the tank, substrate?
Like to share my experience... care to enlighten me...
Recently rescape my 1.5ft tank, as the black gravel is too thin and no base fert. BUT Everything was growing well, even manage to grow enough to give some APP & DD to Apollo...
But the Black gravel I usually buy is out of stock, I finally decide to buy a 5kg no brand type. This time I added 1cm thick base fert... But everything doesn't grow well... APP all died, hair grass: no sign of growth, many turning brown, even the 4 colour lotus also died. and none of my other plants are doing well! Only MOSS which is out of the gravel is thriving! Even all the Malayan snail dies, offspring also died... Fishes are alright, but yamato died... I suspect the gravel have sharp edges cutting the snail soft body and plants' delicate roots... you think?
Does gravel really make a different? (Don't mention those $50 a bag type) I usually buy those gravel that indicate for planting.
Baby Steel!

Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
