Hello guys!
Am thinking of breeding either crs or kingkong, will be commissioning a new tank soon.
Temperature in my current setup is 23 - 26 degrees Celsius.
Any thoughts on tank set up?
Playing with the idea of a 71 by 21 by 30 (cm), with or without partitions. Or a couple of smaller tanks.
Filtration wise, under gravel or drop in filter?
As for substrate, is shrimp soil enough or will I need gravel and extras?
I recently realised that most rocks are not good for shrimp however, I'd still like to have some rock scape. Any suggestions as for rock type?
Also, what are some low maintenance moss I can keep with it?
Anything else I have to keep in mind?
Any advise is appreciated
Thank you!

i think its not a matter of no response, people do expect you to read up in google and the stickies...but trust me, someone will answer your questions soon. Be patient, its is a virtue and a must for this hobby.![]()
Hi Mossi,
Rocks and shrimps you mention.
Don't mix in short, think many fellow bros have tried and suffer loss (equals to losing $$)
You can try searching the fourm, you can see how and why people fail and learn.
Filtration depend on preference. But most people I see here use canister + sponge filter.
Also the bros here mostly also have family and other things and may not reply you with 18 hours so have to be patient.

For my tank the only rock is lava rock nothing else XD
Substrate wise soil only can already.
Filter wise canisters
Mosses for me you can keep mini Fiss you just need cold waters should be alright.
Bigger tanks will tend to have more stable water parameters do yeah..
If you are keeping bkk then I suggest you to fully cycle your tank first. If not every casualty =$
bro mossi, try not to use rocks if you are rearing shrimps. I know it really look nice with rock scape. These rocks in long term will give out some kind of gasy tiny little bubble that will alter the water parameter or harmful to your shrimps.
But of cause the choice is yours. I have tried ohko rocks and those grey colour with white stripes rocks in the past, but took out due to those issue .
The only rocks I think may be ok, are the red lava rocks and ADA's Yamaya stones. Note however, that the Yamaya stones are next to extinct in Singapore and I had only seen them in Hong Kong. They are also about double the price of normal rocks.
I've tried both these rocks in the past and water parameters did not seemed to be affected and I was able to breed fire reds and some CRS. Your mileage may vary though as there are alot of interactions between rocks and other things in your tank.
Edit: Found this video, hehe
Are you new to rearing shrimps? If so, I would suggest that you start slow. Try out with sakuras if not with fire-reds and then upgrade the tank from there on. You might get frustrated when things don't go your way, and if the shrimps do die the damage will not be as huge as having a crs or a bkk dying on you.
There are more than enough threads that would supply you with enough information, and even online articles. Try to read widely so you know what to avoid and what is necessary. I would suggest:
1. don't mix rocks. they alter water parameters and will turn harmful to your shrimps. try driftwood instead but they have to be soaked for a long period of time to remove tannins and any other harmful substances
2. mosses, fissidens, hornworts will do well in the tank. other plants should be able to do well too given the nice temperature you will maintain in your tank. remember to wash the plants thoroughly before introducing into your tank. you don't want harmful pesticides or pests to hitch a joy ride into the tank
3. i would rather you use cannister filters. Eheim is a reputable brand, otherwise the other chinese or taiwanese made should suffice
4. remember that the smaller the tank, the harder it is to maintain water parameters.
hope this helps. most importantly is to have fun along the way.![]()
Need something to scratch that itchy hand of mine.
Don't act smart. Be smart!
Thanks Alvin! I will do that.
Thanks Xconnect!
So far how goes your use of lava rock in your tank?
I've that lava rock and dragon rock are ok for shrimp as they are inert types.
Hey Heman!
Yea! Was trying to do a rockscape with shrimp.
Unfortunately it seems pretty difficult. Not to mention costly.![]()
Cool! There is hope then!
Thanks!!
Very good No
change in gh already half a year ^^
Oh ya forget to add on is that there is black lava rock if You don't like red

Thanks mincedmeat! I will remember that!
You are right. Having fun is important!
After hearing input from you guys. I've taken most of the rocks from my tank. Have only a dragon rock left, which the shop owner told me is inert. However, I will post a pic later on to have its identify confirmed.
