    Its not the straw themselves, but due to the peroxide produced when the straw breaks down.

    Long ago, I tried putting Dupla's barley straws in my canister filter to fight algae. All I can say is nothing beats proper fertilisation and regular water changes to fight algae

    According to the file (yes i read it... lol!), Barley only works when there's sunlight. so I don't think it's a practical method for aquarium algae control.
