    Riccia issues..

Many of us have had successes with growing riccia to the extent that some think that they're a pest plant.

    Various methods of growing involve:

    - letting them float on the surface
    - tying them to a mesh using fishing lines, facing the riccia towards the light
    - tying them to a rock using netting

There are questions I will like to ask, which is:

    - am I able to grow the riccia by just covering them with mesh?
(like creating a box, and containing them under the mesh)
I understand that what keeps them from floating is the weight of the mesh, but how small should the mesh opening size be such that they will receive enough light to grow?

    - is there any difference for growing between mini riccia and riccia? Speaking of which, is any fellow hobbyist able to do a comparison/ measurement of the mini riccia and riccia?

    - is riccia able to be grown low-tech?, ie. without co2 injection at least.

This is my first time growing riccia, and want to avoid the possibility of tying and re-tying the plant as much as possible. Hope anyone is able to help me shine a light on this issue.

    Thanks!

Question 1) not too sure what you meant but i sandwiched riccia in middle of 2 pieces of SS mesh before and they grow well with co2

Question 2) mini riccia is smaller version but i have not tried them yet....haha wait for experts to advice..

Question 3) i tried to grow riccia in low tech and mid tech
Low tech:-Submerged in water:- dark green riccia will grow(i heard it is submerged form),does not look as nice as light green floating type
Low tech:-Floating near surface water:- grows slower compared to the version growing in my mid tech tank(with co2 )

Check out my Blog on planted tank, good for newbies ( i am lazy to retype all the info i know, so please click and read below link... i hope you don't fall asleep while reading)

You can check out the Starpet Riccia Base: http://www.sudo.jp/petproducts/aquarium/aqua_goods/plant/zoom/s5880.html

Its basically a plastic "cage" with a weighted base for growing riccia, i got a set from Seaview a while back to try out and its quite easy to use. Just put a layer of riccia on the base, then clip on the plastic cage and position it in your tank, no need to fiddle with tying to mesh or rocks.

When the riccia grows out, just un-clip the plastic cage to remove the excess riccia, very simple (no need the hassle to untie and re-tie them).

Riccia can be grown low-tech (ie. no Co2), just not as rapidly and less pearling effect... but still at least need to have good lighting.

thanks for the reply! my set of riccia yellowed and died off in a tank. most probaby is no co2 and no fert.
now kinda flourishing in my other tank with co2..

Hmmm...for my case, i currently have a few cages of riccia in a small low-tech 8 litre shrimp tank (its actually more of a shrimplet grow-out/nursery), no Co2 and no ferts, only a Z-Series LED light set on it running 6 hours daily (just enough to cultivate abit of algae and biofilm for the shrimplets).

The riccia is still growing okay in those tank conditions... not super fast but can see the bunches getting visibly thicker when i check every day, had to trim and remove the excess growth every 2 weeks or else the bottom get brown and loose bits start floating up.

With Co2 and ferts combo, you'll definitely see way faster growth in no time.

wow seems like some great reviews of the z series lighting! so you just let the riccia float around? i'm noticing a little growth for the riccia with high light, co2, and ferts.
just tried tying it to a mesh a day ago, usually how long then you would trim so that the riccia does not turn yellow/brown at the ends?

I prefer not to let the riccia float around, it'll be very messy... what i do is just take the cages out from the tank, open them, trim/remove the excess or dead strands, then put back the cages. I use the excess strands harvested to make new mats (i only keep the bright green bits, the brownish bits i throw away).

Usually i trim until the strands poking out are around 2cm height, 'cos i find if they get longer they will tend to block the bottom strands from getting light and end up browning.

    Riccia issues..

I got some growing.. But with fert and co2.. Seems like light is not strong enough and flow rate too strong such that I don't see any pearling at all.

    Re: Riccia issues..

What i read from a blog of a home "farmer" is that mini riccia does not have the problems of riccia.

"Mini Riccia has all the desirable traits of normal Riccia but none of the draw backs. Unlike Riccia, Mini Riccia does not need to be tightly bounded because as it grows it tightly clumps to itself. It does not come loose as easily like normal Riccia, so you dont have to worry about loose bits floating around and taking over the tank. Mini Riccia also pearls like crazy under the right conditions. Mini Riccia grows slower than normal Riccia, making it less demanding. "

Not sure if it is true? Any experiences handling mini riccia?

    Re: Riccia issues..

Mini Riccia (Jap) unlike the norm Riccia don't tend to break away that easily when they get bushier. And yes it's a smaller version and it's popularity comes from Amano. They are weeeeeeds man.... I surrendered after using them for my first planted.

    Cheers
