As I understand lava rocks should be inert so shouldn't be any changes to the water parameter I guess. But anyway I have already starting to cycle the tank. So any changes to the substrate at this point is out dy. thanks for sharing bro.

When your tank is cycled let us know the parameters then.

My ammonia reading is still at 0.5. Have added RCS since day 2 and they are doing fine so far.

    Re: crs shrimp setup question

In this new setup I introduced 2 yamato shrimp and they die after 2 days. I left one in a breeder box and noticed that it has molted and found a dead shrimp. In the main tank the other yamato shrimp also died. However the RCS are doing fine. I turn on the co2 very low and I dose brighty k 2-3 pumps. I'm still puzzled what might be the cause of yamato shrimp death.... I'm wondering could it be caused by my smoking? And then dip my hands in the tank? Anyone smokers had any success with crs or yamato? Lol

Care to share your tank specs?

-water capacity? any measurement of water parameters? take note of PH and GH level in particular
-co2 supply? how many bps? Too much CO2 is harmful
    -water temperature?
-how long have you cycled the tank for?
-What filter is being used and how mature are the filter media?
    -have you added any fertilizers?

From my experience yamatos are pretty hardy.. My guess is there's something wrong with your water parameter.

    Re: crs shrimp setup question

Hi joseph, I fill up around 60-70l of water. Ph is 6. Gh is 4. Co2 is 1 bubble per 2 seconds. I'm using aged media from a matured tank. 2l of ehiem substrat pro and 1 l of biohome driven by ehiem 2215. Additional sponge filter driven by air pump. Temp is 26.5-27.5. I dose brighty k 2 pumps twice per week. Thank has been cycled for a month now. I added RCS since day 2 of adding new Ada aquasoil with no deaths. I have a bag of activated carbon and seachem cuprisorb just in case. I use prime for anti chlorine. I'm afraid might be the chemicals from my hands as I smoke but not sure.

If i remember correctly, i read somewhere in this forum that people find prime to be harmful to shrimp. might want to check that out. Else u can ensure u wash your hands before touching the water.

Thanks bro. I'll check it out. I always wash my hands before cleaning the tank though.
