Rohaizal ~ When you say "control the output of the LED", are you saying that you want to reduce the brightness so that it'll last longer? Another thing is if you reduce the output, does it mean even lesser power consumption and also less heat from the LEDs?

reduce the brightness -> less heat -> last longer

Normally the LED spec will tell you what is the junction temperature used on 50,000 hrs operation test.
For example CREE XR-E was tested at 135C or bellow junction temperature. Junction temperature does not mean ambient temperature. Ambient temperature is meaningless because the important is what inside the die.

I am still waiting for someone to post that that used
aquarium planted tank led for 50,000hrs.
I dont see it possible for planted tank led lights.
If i can get 1.5 to 2yrs from the led i be happy.

No, reducing the led intensity during operation is to limit the amount of light that reach the livestock, eg corals in my case. For the Maxspect Mazarra and Razor, you cannot start at 100% level in the beginning. You need to start at a lower level, such as 60% and adjust from there. A high intensity led light would cause harm to the corals and corals will react if they are being illuminated too much. Clams would not open fully and even anemone would move to find shade. Acclimitising the led to the live stock must be done gradually for these high end led set.

Even with controller, the led set would comes with additional lenses to either provide more coverage area or to narrow the light coverage. In theory, should the output of the led begin to degrade, the user might switch to a narrower lenses in order to squeeze more performance out of the led.

As for lower setting equals to lower electrical consumption, I do not have the equipment to measure this. Have not seen this being done on other forums too. My advise for future led user is if you want to use led, get one with adjustable controllability, replaceble led and multiple angle lenses.

I checked the Maxspect LED light setups online and those are really high-end equipment! Very impressive stuff!

By chance have you come across any good LED light sets with similar programmable intensity/dimmer/timer features (so that it can simulate dawn and dusk effects in the tank), but perhaps at lower 3 digit prices? 4 digit prices are still abit too high for my current hobby budget at the moment.

Depending on your setup, the Maxspect Razor 8k planted tank version and the Kessil A150 are my choices as of right now. The Razor has the slim lightset look with cooling fins spanning the entire length of the led set, which passively remove heat away from the led board. It does comes with fans attached but I never personally seen the fan being activated. Can be placed above the tank as it comes with stand mounts or it can be hanged as well. The Razor Nano is going to be available soon.

The Kessil A150 is a pendant type led set with built in fan to actively cool the led set. I have not seen one up close but those only found on the net. What caught my interest is that it only consumed 32w with light output comparable to a 150w mh. Not too sure of controller availability but their newer model has this feature.

Decision, decision. Google the mentioned led set to find out more. Hope this helps!

no problem with green plant growth, 2ft tank with 30w LED, but I 'm having problem with red plant. I probably need to double it to grow red plant.

Thanks for those leads, the Razor looks cool and has the exact dimmer/timer features i'm looking for. Will check them out!
