If I'm not mistaken, there is still activated carbon within the white filter wool media. However, I wouldn't fret too much over this as the fertilizers you dosed will be minimally adsorbed.
Hello everyone,
I recently changed the filter in my tank to a GEX "L" Hang On Filter. It comes with two cartridges, one black and white. However. since I am adding fertilisers to the tank, I removed the black activated carbon cartridge. I would just like to ask:
1. What materials are included in the other (white) cartridge, and will it filter fertilisers out of the water?
2. Also, how often should I replace the cartridge?
Thank you for your time and help.
Sincerely,
Ganthet

Hi guys, does the activated carbon absorb Excel that I dose?
Also is it advisable to have activated carbon while doing cycling?
If I choose not buy the replacement cartridge, what do you guys put in replacement?
You can use activated carbon during cycling.
You can replace it with any medium if you don't want to use cartridge.
I am using the cartridge, lazy to pack the medium. I can every 2-3 months as the GEX is my secondary filter.
I have removed the carbon cartridge and replace it with all bio-media cartridges.
I have though of putting non-GEX bio media such as Eheim Substrat pro or Seachem Matrix, but there won't be any fine filter foam found on the cartridges.
Anyone out there using their own bio-media (not the GEX cartridges), without the white fine filter foam?
You can fill the HOF with bio media, and then you cut out a small piece of filter floss, and put it on top where the water flows. Kinda like this (the way i use it anyways. haha) :
This setup is easy for me in the sense that:
1) I can pickup the filter floss and replace with a new one without removing the HOF.
2) bio media at the bottom is not disturbed. I used ANS lava rock filter media for my setup.
Do take note that my tank is small, so this is feasible for me. For larger setups, you might find yourself replacing the floss even faster..

Advice from boss Felix
Thanks for the suggestion. Sounds like a good idea! Will go back and take a look again and see how I can improvise.
Thank you.
Hi,
I just got a Gex hang on filter M.
Can anyone share, what is the tube in the picture used for?
Is it necessary?
Thanks.

The aeration tube is quite useful. I once bought a water pump which comes with an aeration tube, but so far have not found how to make it work.
I used my aeration tube on my Boyu Powerhead to diffuse my CO2 when my ceramic one got clogged. Great to use since bubbles get mashed up inside the powerhead! Think It'll work same for yours too!

Please advise me how to place the aeration tube correctly. My new powerhead is not used as I do not know how to create a stream of bubbles. I have seen beautiful stream of bubbles created by an aeration tube. Hope to learn how to do it.
Hope Shifu UA can help me on this.

*Powerhead*
All you have to do is to attach the airline to the air inlet nipple on the powerhead. The air will be sucked in and will be diffused by the powerhead. In order to get a nice stream of bubbles instead of just random bursts, I suggest you lower the pressure of the air coming into the powerhead by adding a regulator. These parts come with the powerhead or you can purchase them yourself. :-)

I did try repositioning the height of the air inlet tube but could not get any bubbles coming out of the water jet. So till today, my powerhead (generic brand) is still not used, as I only bought it to oxygenate my goldfish tank.
