My Nutrafin CO2 had depleted and I had just tried mixing with sugar, yeast and baking soda. I had followed the instructions from one of the threads here, ie. filled up with sugar to the first level of the Nutrafin bottle, added one teaspoon of yeast and soda, and filled it up with lukewarm water to the second level.

The first mixture was done last night but when I came to office this morning, there was no reaction. I poured away the contents and tried with the same combination, but this time shaking it to ensure that the sugar dissolves.

The water in the tube was immediately being pushed down and several bubbles appear in the bubble counter. But after about 15 minutes, the bubbles stopped and water actually started back flowing up the tube. The initial bubbling could be due to the steam from the warm water.

At about 1300hrs, I poured away the contents again and tried a third time. This time dissovling the sugar first then adding the yeast and soda. Till now, still no reaction.

Can anyone advise how long does it take for the mixture to start produing CO2? or was my mixture wrong?

Using DIY CO2 was a tricky affair for me.

I didn't get it to produce bubbles initially despite following the instructions given. And I only succeeded after my third attempt in fact.

    My mistakes were:

    1. I placed the CO2 concoction bottle LOWER than my tank.

    2. CO2 tubing from bottle to tank was far too LONG.

As a result, the CO2 produced (if any) had an 'uphill task' to travel up the LONG tubing before they reached my tank.

Also, check whether there's no leakage somewhere.

hmmm.... the Nutrafin set has those holder that hanged the bottle at the same level as the tank... anyway... will shorten the tubes and see any results....

    thanks.

And fermentation needs 12~24hours. Yeah, those are some mistakes I made too

I think you gotta let the solution cool before adding the yeast. Otherwise, the yeast would be "killed" by the temperature.

    DIY co2

Me too, met with a few failures and tried several mixtures. But at the end of the day, i came to realise that most of us neglected the most obvious mechanical feature..that is - the bottle cap hole where u insert the tube and it may be leaking gas. It should be air-tight and sealed up. I glued up the cap and the co2 is still bubbling after 3 weeks...

Another thing i learnt is to be patient. I bought an air diffuser with those spiral tube type but the co2 seemed unable to push up the spiral tube. I left it alone and the next day, it was bubbling..

    Some of my experiences:

In our tropical environment, tap water will do. The hot water will kill the yeast, as explained by BCLEE.

Next, usually the fresher the yeast is, the faster the fermentation time. Store the yeast in the fridge (not the freezer) to keep it fresh longer. There may be foaming in the bottle as the yeast ferments.

You can do the mixing of the ingredients (sugar+baking soda) in a teapot before pouring into the bottle. And lastly adding the yeast.

Check your tubings/ joints for leakages. Usually that's the problem in DIY CO2.

    Hi,

Am using only half teaspoon of baking powder and half teaspoon yeast. Takes about 12 hours before you really see the results....

    Thanks all for the advice.

Maybe it was the yeast and the soda... had bought from the store below my block and the items were found covered with dust... the expiry is end of this year... what's the shelf life of such products? 2 or 3 yrs?

hehe.. i will go back office 2molo morning n check... if it does not starts bubbling by end of the day... will try again using byron, juggler, n BCLEE's advice.....

    For your info,

There are 2 types of yeast in the market,

    1) Active Yeast / Instant Yeast. ( Take shorter time to produce Co2 )
    2) Dry Yeast. ( Take longer time to produce Co2 )

For the both type of yeast mention above, they only produced Co2 when they have finished use up the Oxygen inside the air tube and mixture container.

So please be patience, wait and see. May take a day to one and the half day to produce Co2.

    Best Regards,
    Vincent

    Hi Vinc

Thanks fer the info. I am using instant yeast.

I have since removed the bubble counter and connected the tube direct from the Nutrafin bottle to the airstone. I can see that the water in the tube are being pushed down.... however at a very slow rate....

Well, will have to test see how long my patience last be4 I rushed to get the original Nutrafin refill.... hahahaha

Yo bro balacam, can you provide me the exact recipe you are using? This is because I've tried so many others but my success rate is low. Thanks. The one provided here is good but it doesn't bubble in 15mins.

Also, how long does your's bubble?

hey... glad to hear u succeeded... did u use a ceramic diffuser at the end???

cos mine still not bubbling when left office in the evening... the air seems to have stopped at a level and not advancing any lower... was wondering could it be the ceramic diffuser at the end tt is causing the problem... maybe the pressure from the DIY mixture not strong enuff to push it thru...???

    so sad...
