I think this is the 2nd times it happened and get publised right?

IMAGINE waking up at 4am to see your living room on fire. This is exactly what happened to me recently. A fire started from a top-mounted aquarium pump attached to a new fish tank.
I have written to Spring Singapore about this. However, the department concerned merely told me it was still investigating the cause of such fires, and advised me to use other types of pumps.
There are many suppliers of aquarium pumps and minimum safety standards need to be set.
If you have a top-mounted pump, check with Spring Singapore to see if it is safe.

the are 45 types of consumer electrical goods that require certification before being retailed in singapore.
however, aquarium related electrical goods are not listed.
check spring singapore website
so distributors/retailers will not spend money to have these product certified safe.
for peace of mind, look for branded products or product which have UL (states) or CE (europe) marks.
for local certified electrical products, look for the 'safety mark'.
these products are certified safe.
