hey... glad to hear u succeeded... did u use a ceramic diffuser at the end???

cos mine still not bubbling when left office in the evening... the air seems to have stopped at a level and not advancing any lower... was wondering could it be the ceramic diffuser at the end tt is causing the problem... maybe the pressure from the DIY mixture not strong enuff to push it thru...???

    so sad... [/quote:86309f2776]

i use air stone and it is producing burst of small bubbles every 4-5 secs

bro thks fer the info... will check 2molo morning n if it still does not reach the diffuser will change it to those plastic air stone... hope tt will work... if not the next step would be to get fresh ingredients from the supermarket....

    wish me luck~~~~

oh yes, why? bro wf7850 why don't you use the flipper?

i don't use the flipper because this is the first time i use co2 and i don't want to introduce too much. i want to try with air stone first. if it goes well, i will use the flipper

wf7850: Only CO2 tanks got the pressure to push through the ceramic diffuser. For DIY ones, something will leak before the pressure is big enough to push through the diffuser. If you want, you can use a air-stone. Otherwise let the CO2 collect in a inverted bell or reactor.

BTW - DIY CO2 usually last for 3 weeks to a month. By then the bubble drops to 1 bubble in more than 15 sec.

    Cheers!

Hi all.... thanks fer all your advice.... was quite busy in office 2day to come online.....

fyi i have changed to a plastic airstone tis morning when i reach office n saw tt the air in the tube had remained at the same level as yesterday evening when i left.... by noon... the air had advanced double the distance and by the time i left just now... it had almost reached the airstone.... shld c the bubbles by 2molo morning... keeping all my fingers and toes crossed.... wish me luck... hehe...

as fer why i am not using the flipper... hehe... i jus set up another 3-ft planted in my office n had used the flipper with the pressurized CO2 tank... look more chio mah.... hahaha... u guys must be scolding me stupid.... shld have been the other way round.... rite???

Thanks again fer all yr advice.... will post the result 2molo morning....

    FINALLY...!!!!!

It's bubbling liao.... bout one bubble every 5 seconds.....

I had also swapped the flipper back to the DIY n the ceramic diffuser to the CO2 tank.... everything per normal.....

Means all along my mixture was correct and the ingredients had not expired.... hahaha... had wasted about 4 mixtures without realising that it was the insufficient pressure......

Hope this thread will help those members venturing into DIY CO2....

    Patience Patience.... hahaha...

    guys.. just to share something.

I put in 3/4 teaspoon of instant yeast, 1/2 teaspoon of soda bicarbonate and sugar up to the first mark of the Nutrafin bottle.

guess what? now, my bubbling is 1 bubble per 2 seconds! BTW, i am using the flipper.

Another thing is anyone knows why my KH still a low 3? after the increase in CO2?

what will happen if i don't use fresh yeast? i used to use the nutrafix refill and the bubbles produce are smaller and more in numbers compared to the ones i'm having now. is it because of the yeast?

The water in the tube was immediately being pushed down and several bubbles appear in the bubble counter. But after about 15 minutes, the bubbles stopped and water actually started back flowing up the tube. The initial bubbling could be due to the steam from the warm water. [/quote:8450022e69]

I think you gotta let the solution cool before adding the yeast. Otherwise, the yeast would be "killed" by the temperature.

    BC[/quote:8450022e69]

if you could see steam, the temperature is definitely too hot for the yeast, as mentioned by bclee. The fact that there is suck-back of water also indicate that your initial temperature is too high. This is purely physics: hot air expands and when it cools it contracts hence create a negative pressure differential big enough to cause the back flow.

i hv been using the Nutrafin system for almost a year. all while hv been using only tap water and bubbling always start in 3~4 hrs, no problem. The rate of the bubbling can be controlled by the amount of yeast added. If you want several bubbles per sec then you can double the recommended dose of yeast but the sugar will be depleted faster meaning more frequent replenishment.

i wonder has anyone use tat electrically ionised-carbon slab producing CO2?
Jebao is one brand tat has it

    saw at my friend's place
got alot of bubbles being produced even when turned up at the lowest rate

read the manual saying the CO2 produced will not be visible
and the bubbles produced and seen are actually Hydrogen!!??

isit good for a planted tank?
    will it kill the fishes

i don't think it will kill the fishes but IMO, it is not worth it. the replacement for the carbon slab cost $60 (read from somewhere)

  14. #34
saw another one at an LFS
The carbon slab heard it costs around $10 plus

The brand is CHAE (some china brand)
    $30 plus

the whole set consists of only the carbon slab inside the ionised casing

was quite interested when i first saw it too... but after some serious tinking... concluded tt nuthing beats pure CO2 fr a pressurized tank... one will never kno how pure are the CO2 being produced fr the plates... n the replacement cost is really a down factor.....

    my 1-ct comments.... :P

    agree

really wonder about the quality of the carbon slab too

This system uses electrolysis to produce CO2. It will be purer than any source. However, there is 2 shortfall IMO.

    1. It consumes CO3 from the water and KH will decline. You have to constantly monitor the KH to avoid it from dropping too low.

    2. The replacement electrodes are not cheaper compared to pressurised cylinder.

excellent info about the CO3 and drop in KH

actually the replacement carbon slab is around $10 plus
somewhere near the $ for topping up CO2 tank

to add to disadvantage is tat
dun like the piece of black plastic slab sticking at the side of the tank
unless you use tall plants to cover it
