Crayfish moulted!

My boy P. clarkii just moulted!
Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it actually happening.

Last time i did rear crayfish .. I didnt know they will moult .. so i saw one of my crayfish turning slightly white and lying there motionless, i thought it was dead .. when i touch it with my net, it suddenly dash out of the moulted shell .. Shocked me .. haha ..

Ha ha, mine molted too...and it ate up most of the molt.

Even though I know that crayfish moult, I was amazed by the almost complete shell.
It's awesome how it comes out in one piece; especially the claws and thin legs.

Now we'll see how he fairs in his vulnerable state.
The girl crayfish is pretty aggressive, and so are the cherry barbs.

did u have enough hiding places? ideally for 2 crays u shd have 3 hiding spots.
even more impt since ur tank is small...

so intending to keep just 1 or getting another?

Yes, my tank is actually too small for 2, but I was taking a chance.
I did think I provided sufficient hiding place, but obviously I didn't.

For now, I will just keep one.

hi kermit13sg, it's easy to tell the gender of crayfish, especially for the procambarus genus.

I realised tt i made a stupid typo in my post. all 3 of mine are FEMALE. hahaha oops.

regarding puffers, if yours are tiny, they are likely to be the dwarf green puffers, which seems to be quite popular. they like to chew on snails but as they grow older they get more aggressive and bite any shellfish they can find including crayfish and also the fins of other fish. in short, it's not easy to keep them with other fish / shellfish. and if i'm not wrong, they need brackish water once they hit 1-2 inches else they won't live very long after that. crays don't do well with that amount of salt so either way it'll be tough.

it is very clear and easy guide. it will be very challenging for my case, because mine are mini crays. I think I need to add another equipment to my list, a magnifying glass that is.

kermit13sg: same thing happened to my friend's cray. how large is it? if smaller than an inch u probably want to check that the water temperature is about 23-26 deg, and slightly alkaline, pH 7-8. my friend put his tank beside the window and it also refused to eat. too hot. died within 2 weeks. T_T
