I was told that Java Fern grows better when planted into substrate instead of being tied to driftwood ?! I always thought they should be tied to driftwood because that is how they are sold. Does anyone here grow their Java Fern in substrate ?

IME they do better on driftwood. When planted on small/low driftwood, you'll find that their roots will not penetrate the substrate much but cling on the gravel instead.
