Hi, i've tried to keep crs shrimp in a planted tank in the past but never successful. Im planning for a dedicated tank now and considering between Ada and benibachi soil. Which should i go for? Also thinking of using either of the soil depend on the feedback with UGF filter and cannister. Should i use ugf or just skip it? Anyone experienced with either soi? Thanks

If you are using UGF, how will you chill the water?

Im planning using just a simple fan. I will be using a cannister as well. But unsure if i should use ugf as a compliment. Or just sponge filter?

In my opinion, if you are using canister.. Then use the canister connect to a chiller to stabilize the temperature instead of fan..

Using UGF or sponge filter both is fine.. But UGF if choke.. You will have a hard time clearing that choke without disturbing the soil on it..

Ok. So i suppose UGF may not be a very good idea then. I dont plan to invest on a chiller for now it will be too high investment if they still die. Just want to be able to keep them alive. Chiller will be next step if they survive. Thats why im contemplating on benibachi soil as well since its designed for shrimps. Or should i just ADA amazonia which is cheaper.

UGF is good but just the worry of choking...

I feel that without a chiller, the part about CRS surviving is not easy (but possible) unless your room is air-conditioned to maintain temp.. Purchasing a chiller is minimal cost compare to losing lots of money spent on CRS.. It's just a one-time investment..

As for choosing of soil.. Everyone has 'their liking' soil when it comes to shrimp keeping.. Myself used Benibachi Soil before but unable to get used to it.. But using ADA Amazonia Soil suits me, so for time being, I won't change to other soil..

Do keep in mind there is a need to 'reset' or change soil when the soil loses its buffering capabilities or shrimps starts having problems after a duration..

    Happy shrimping..

You are most welcome.. Shrimp keeping initially might be a little hard but after a couple of times of retrying.. You will get the hang of it.. Just carry on learning from what you have done wrong..

    Hope you will be successful..

    Re: crs shrimp setup question

dont have to add anything else. ADA 5 elements are more for planted.

CRS tank you just need moss will do.

Ok thanks. I thought the 5 elements would help the tank to cycle faster. Save me some money there. 7

    Re: crs shrimp setup question

Second day into cycling the tank. I used 1 bag of 9l amazonia soil. The gravel thickness is around 3.5-4 cm thick if I lay it out flat. But I made the center thicker to plant some Downoi to absorb the excessive nutrients in from the new soil. Should I add more soil?

Another thing, any idea if I could use those black garbage bin to store and age water? I'm concern if the PVC or what lever material used might be toxic? Because there is a chemical smell to it.

    Re: crs shrimp setup question

I would suggest using New Amazonia, power sand, and some mineral for the shrimps health

Power sand? Isn't that for planted setup? Nutrients for the plant?

    Re: crs shrimp setup question

you can use other media that normally use for filter and probably add some bacteria starter. I am not sure about the lava rock whether it will increase ph and gh.
