Best filter media you can recommend for Eden 501?

Everyone has their favorite filter media of choice and quite frankly, its tough to quantify which one is best as each brand has their benefits and all market theirs as the best too... i guess you could read through the various marketing literature to help make your choice.

Personally, i've been using Seachem Matrix for all my Eheim filters (including in my Eden 501 units too), so far they have been working nicely and hold beneficial bacteria well enough during transfers to further seed and cycle multiple tanks quickly.

Brands is personal choices, i did not really bothered about each marketing talk.

Regardless the brand, as long it can cover your bio tank waste for nitrification , thats should fit the purpose.

Yeah, that's the tricky part... unless someone can take the time to do a back-to-back test on a series of identical tanks with the same filters but filled with different medias over a period of time, then there could be a way to record the various results and determine which is better.

I've also been looking out for such tests but have not seen any posted up online yet though.

I guess most people just use the original media that comes packaged with their filters and it works fine anyways, or buy the popular 3rd party ones that others have also used before.

In my case, i use mostly Seachem products so ended up using Matrix too.

To me, the best media will hold the biggest surface area available for BB, but that's just me

Yup , it rid the tanins that turn water brownish!

Getting an appropiate media bag for Purigen may be a challenge as I under this media is very small in size.

Previously i saw a mesh bag that is fine enough for purigen in c328. Im currently using those laundry bag, to put my purigen in it . No problem at all

At C328 they do have fine mesh bags that should be adequate for Purigen. In my old Eden 501, I used Eheim's Ehfilav or those lava chips in one of the compartments, replacing the stock ceramic rings that came in the box. Seachem Matrix should be a good alternative as stated by the rest. I placed a filter sponge over the intake to reduce my maintenance requirements, since all I had to do was to rinse off the dirt that accumulates in that sponge pre-filter.

Hope I'm not deviating too much from topic. I used to fit filter sponge over the intake of my filters (HOFs and canisters) but find that the sponge chokes up too easily and have am now using a gUSH filter guard instead. Does essentially the same purpose but like mentioned, goes a longer way before having to wash and scrub.

Thanks for sharing. Want to try using purigen for my 4x2x2 sump tank does it really make the water crystal clear?

I've also added a sponge media over the intake pipe. I rinse it once a week with the weekly water change and yes, it picks up a lot of stuff.

Make sure the sponge you choose for the intake is not so fine that it clogs easily. The sponge media I have from is actually quite porous so it doesn't clog up or slow down the water flow after a week.

But if the sponge was not there, all that stuff would find its way into the canister and clog up the canister faster.....

Lots of laundry bags for $2 at Daiso, but dunno whether the size is appropriate....
