Are there anything that I could put in my HOF like say ceramic rings? And what are they for?

Yes you can. Alot of us are doing that.
Increase Bio-filtration capacity.

in lay man terms, more space for BB to grow.

My HOF is more or less only CR. A little sponges here and there to force more water through the CR but otherwise only CR.
