Nice bright red, but not the deep red that painted fire red have. One other option is to choose from tanks instead of bags at some lfs. The one that i most often go to is y618. Even though the tank is labeled as sakura, most of the shrimps instead are very nice low grade fire red. You can choose those with full red legs, and full red bodies. However, i was there last week and there were very little left in the tank, probably someone saw my other posts and went there to buy. I'll be there tonight, so i can check it out for you.

Went to 618 today took a look at the Sakura tank still think they are no where near GC standard in size and redness. Even CRS haven whose shrimps are at a premium didn't came close to GC's standard now I wonder where GC get their shrimps
Actually, I try to give C328 a call once in awhile to find out if they currently have brought in any Painted Fire Reds. My first batch of Fire Red's were bought from them. Beautiful full red's. It's quite rare now and they do not know when it is available. Try to head down in the morning's to get the best pick of the lot. Just an update on my tank:
My tank is currently having an infestation of Nematodes and Hydra's right now. Noticed it only last Friday.
1. Anyone has encountered this problem and what were your methods in eradication?
2. I thought of buyin Oto's as I heard they are 'shrimp safe'. Do you think they will clear my tanks of parasite?
3. Any other shrimp save ways to combat these pests?

Never faced an infestation but otos will not solve the problem
Otos are shrimp safe because they're herbivores. They fight with my shrimps for algae wafers but give the hikari shrimp food (non-veg) so I highly doubt they will eat hydras/nematodes

Are you having white worms in the substrate or white worms crawling on your tank wall? White worm in substrate try vermex c328 counter white and blue packaging. If crawling on your glass use Planarian no more medicine. Effectiveness will vary based on how you apply the medicine best use syringe.
Thanks bro. I can't confirm if it's planaria yet. I don't see any triangular head from the white worms. Their crawling all over the tank walls. No worms spotted on the substrate yet.
I'm looking out for hydra's as well as I seen a few hanging onto the tank walls as well. Will be monitoring my tank everyday after work.
I'm planning to get Zebra oto's but their kinda expensive. I'm having brown algae break out as well. My lights on my shrimps tank are on for more than 12 hours. Sometimes 16!
Try normal ottos first get the hang of it because ottos are well known to die easily. Last thing you want to see is a dead zebra otto, your heart will pain
Tip for otto choosing: go for otto living in a dirty tank more then a clean tank... they will live longer trust me

Yeah, i agree with qool on the oto care tips, they should be kept in mature established tanks with stable conditions, with clean water and low nitrate levels, but still with enough algae and bio-film on surfaces to graze on.
Most otos are wild caught though, so they tend to be fragile and starved when first introduced into tanks (hence the low survivability rates)... the first few weeks is the critical period to see if they can make it, once they are okay for the first month, they would usually be healthy and hardy enough to thrive for a long time in the tank.
Hi! Yes, I've been reading up about oto's. Sensitive like shrimps. I still haven't bought them yet. I don't have the time to head down to the fish shops just yet. Still have to combat the planaria infestation in my tank. I've been following your website. I especially love the new project of 'sand cats' tank. Simple and beautiful with one centre piece.
I wonder if shrimps will do well with a tank full of fine sand. Might be interested to create a tank like that for shrimps as well. But to do that, I would need to get rid of my comm tank. Oh well, maybe that can wait.
Still trying to combat the planaria. Will be looking into what bro qool had reccomend me to get.
Sand substrates seem to be okay for shrimps, so far i've not had any issues with those setups... though most shrimp breeders would usually prefer to use soil designed for keeping shrimps, mainly to control their water parameters (especially those who keep CRS).
Note that with light colored sand substrate, i notice the colors of the shrimps tend to look less intense (the shrimp colors are the same, just that the contrast with light sand isn't as deep as compared to dark colored substrates).
Yeah. I bought some cory sand sometime ago and I've thought of replacing the black substrate from my comm tank to that. Might try it out. I also notice as well the the colouration from shrimps on black substrate tends to look more solid. I use to keep them in a planted tank as well and they don't portray out the solid colouration as they do now.
I have since stopped my planted tank set-up and went into moss and low light plants. Now my ADA liquid ferts and Co2 accessories have been sitting around for months waiting for a buyer who is interested to pick them up. Doubt I will ever go back into planted tanks as its too much of a hassle.
Yup keeping them with black subtrate is normal for thai lfs selling rcs. Helps to make the low grade fire red look like painted fire red lolx. But if you buy good quality fire red they look good anywhere.

On another note, I'm purchasing about 16 Corydoras Pygmy from a buyer in AQ. Do you think they will readily eat the planarian in the shrimp tank? I'm also afraid that it might cause stress to the shrimps as well. I've been reading that cory's are generally harmless and would not go after the little shrimplets. I wonder if that is the case?
I do not want to go into a drastic measure of using medication as I'm afraid it will affect my shrimps and their offsprings. I already have 2 batches of offsprings in the tank and it wouldn't be wise to introduce any sort of medication into the tank.

Dwarf cories are generally shrimp-safe. I got over 30 pygmy and hastatus in my tank together with Sakuras and they are all busy digging the sand for food, never see them harassing the shrimps. Instead its the shrimps who go harassing them, thinking them as food.
Hahaha! Yes I know! I have 10 Oto's in there now. I'll be updating the pictures soon!
