    1) i don't see a problem but LEDs are a bit expensive compared to fluorescent lightings

    2) it might be transiting lol. (depends what state you got it in)

    Re: Roy (New tank)

8W x 2 from FL seems like not enough light intensity for the HC.

Looks like a tall tank? Maybe the light can't reach the HC too.

Since you have Co2 injection, consider switching to T5HO or LED with higher light wattage and intensity.

Beamworks has a few different grades of LED lights, if you don't mind spending more, go for the more powerful models using 3W LED arrays, those are good for taller tanks.

If you find that the lighting is too much, just adjust the photoperiod or raise it up higher over the aquarium.

Unfortunately, my budget for lighting should be around 80 - 100 . I just bought a T5 24Wx2, haven't used yet.. so have to wait till next paycheck. ha.

I am also looking at Up-Aqua Z series.

LEDs are expensive, just make do of whatever you have first.

    Re: Roy (New tank)

Updated pic of my tank. Some of the hc dying ?
    8744350320_87cd3c2af0.jpg
    Use a oversize 2ft T5 24w X 2 and notice some pearling .
Plan to get more hc to replace the dying ones. I saw video that they plant hc along with the wool. Is that right way?

    Re: Roy (New tank)

Its still the beginning, it can take weeks (sometimes months) for a new tank to fully cycle, my first tank took around 5-6 weeks to finish cycling.

What substrate are you using? Didn't see it listed in your tank specs...if you are using ADA aqua soil (just a guess), it should be releasing a lot of nutrients and ammonia during the first few weeks (its designed to boost plant growth during startup). For tanks with relatively low initial plant mass, its a good idea to do larger water changes to remove the excess ammonia and help keep the levels manageable.

But since you are doing fishless cycle, there are no fishes or shrimps to worry about anyways, so just let the bacteria grow at their own natural pace and your tank will cycle eventually, just have to be patient.

    Re: Roy (New tank)

Roger that. Should I have to plant more plants during initial stage ? I had seachem excel now . do I need to get the fertilizer as well ? Any recommendations beside ADA ?

Yes total normal hc will torment you with yellow leaves and melting before showing some green. Just maintain good light co2 and water flow they will recover.

    Re: Roy (New tank)

More fast growing plant can help soak up excess nutrients and probably speed up the cycling process abit, but you'll also have to make sure they don't crowd out or overshadow the HC or hairgrass.

If you are using ADA aqua soil, then probably don't need to dose ferts for the moment, the soil should be releasing enough nutrients, but after the initial few weeks, watch the growth rate and then dose micro and macro ferts accordingly, you can read up on the estimative index (EI) method on fert dosing.

You can try fertilizers like Seachem Flourish Comprehensive (and their macro nutrients range if necessary), or the Tropica Premium/Specialized fertilizer range (i'm currently using this for my plant holding tank). What ferts you use will depend on the density of the flora and fauna in the tank.

Yeah, HC will usually melt abit when transiting to submerged and establishing roots in the new environment. Perhaps you could also trim the tall HC stalks and push the HC plantlets lower into the substrate too (just the leaves showing is sufficient), it'll help encourage more compact growth.

    Re: Roy (New tank)

Roger that . I don't quite understand the EI thingy . correct me if I am wrong, it say dose slightly more than usual and change more water than usual right?. I think I should redo the while thing and increase the plant mass this time..
