In the science education line, better paying than research imo, but science is a field that you don't go into if you expect lots of money. On hindsight, I would have taken an electronics engineering degree, it would have been just as fun and I would have better prospect getting a PR in Australia.

Australia does not need electronics engineer, there are limited electronics jobs over there. If you plan to migrate to Australia, its better of to do data network, power electronics, fiber optic where you can work for telecom company, banking and mining. How do I know? because I 'm electronics engineer graduated from there but end up getting job in Singapore.

I would say it all boils down to expectations. In my opinion, singaporeans are very fortunate relative to other countries, no doubt our work life balance is more screwed comprared to the west but we have so much more. Unless you have travelled, read a lot, spent time out of Singapore you will never appreciate how blessed we are, Singapore or not.

I am happy as I know where to draw my expectations and stop asking for the sky. Instead of spending time whining, spend that energy to plan a strategy to get you where you want be more rewarding. Don't join the herd is my advice.

Re: people here, what jobs are you guys in?

With fast rising cost of living, important assets like HDB, the price has gone up too much. A few good friends of mine who bought their HDB in 2003-4 paid 158K for their 4-room flats in Sengkang. I got mine in 2010, paid 320K for a 4-room flat. The monthly loan of 1K was paid by my CPF and by the time i completed my payment. I left with almost nothing for my retirement. I believe most of us just want a simple life and retired peaceful and have enough cash to last till our very last day. But I strongly believe our next generation will suffers.

Ryan, what you did now is correct to plan your future ahead. As what felix_fx2 says, girlfriend and wife, be patience and open your eyes wide.

As for job market out there, what i forsee that only service sector, medical sector and education sector will be doing good, the rest seems to be going down.... sad

recruit express do not have much part time jobs to begin with. they do not earn much for part time jobs, and thus their focus is on full time jobs. that being said. you should try other agencies like kelly services, adecco, bgc just to name a few. they have much better customer service and job match success than recruit express. Good luck in your search for jobs.

Re: people here, what jobs are you guys in?

    Hey there Ryan,

Half the battle is won if you can think this way. Most people our age are still concerned about how to spend money not earn money.

What I can say to you is goal setting should be the most important step hereon. What you see yourself 30years down the road, will decide what you do for yourself now.

Having a focused goal transcends to your attitude, behaviour and most importantly, change your myopic view that a high paying job now is the BEST job. Your first job now must value-add in whatever way to your ultimate goal.

Your exciting journey begins now and work towards branding, classifying and labeling yourself as who you want to be.

We all talk about passion but we overrate that word too often now. Passion drives people but is there enough passion for you to work for free? Not wrong to want to earn money from passion, in fact - perfect if you can find a well paying job you are passionate in but remember Passion is hard work too. Interest does not equate to Passion.

Secondly, at our age now - if you want to be successful, personal life is 20% and work/career is 80%. when you have achieved your goals in a 1, 3, 5 years breakdown. You can re-evaluate and change that percentage accordingly.

Your point about Recruitment agency - You have to take their words with a pinch of salt. Do not settle for a PT job just because you can't get a FT now. These agencies need you to keep coming back sp they get as much commission from your employers. I hope you get my drift. If i go on, I might start to swear.

Believe in yourself and work towards your goal.

Dream big because only big dreams are worth dreaming for.

Stay young, stay foolish - Steve Jobs

By the way, I'm 25 this year and I'm a TV director. Anything is possible! You just have to man up because school is over.

Re: people here, what jobs are you guys in?

Oh i forgot one thing too!

Fighting towards your goal breeds passion! I like pets or taking photos is not a passion. that is interest and interests are only good as a hobby or stress relief from our hectic world.

Passion drives people to wake up everyday and want to go to work. And for me, this passion is to achieve my goals before I'm 40.

So who or what do you want to be when you're 40?

    Good luck bro!

    I am a salesman

Get a job that let you sit back and enjoy your tank. I am lucky. I am still in this hobby. 10 years after AQ is formed. I think less than 5% of my batch AQ 2001~2002 still in this planted tank hobby. Life is such. Bread butter is more important. And when a woman comes in and don't appreciate/understand/care/support what you do including your hobbies, it is very very tough

Tom Barr taught me... Less is more : )

I don't like tear down and put up tank again. I just want to enjoy tetra swimming in the tank and watching grass grow.

Therefore, I need a job to fuel my planted tank hobby and keep myself fit to stretch down into my 5x2x2 planted tank to harvest my plants. song.....

You are most welcomed! I had the same talk from a good army buddy during one of our drinks at the mess day. So I am very glad to pass it on.

All the best! Let us know how your job hunting goes. Interviews are great ways to hone your speaking skills and confidence. I used to tell my girlfriend - Don't be afraid of them and always just imagine "they owe you money! And they need to know how to pay you back!" It helps her relax before an interview.

And thanks Felix for your compliments! My ex-boss during internship was just as spectacular. No, he did not physically attacked me but he was Creative Director for Fujifilm at a very young age. The old Fuji logo was his creation when he was only 16 via a competition.
