Hi everyone. This is the first time I have posted although I have been keeping two 2' planted tanks for a short while.
I am thinking of upgrading to a bigger tank. I am considering either a 4' x 2' x 2' or a 5' x 1 1/2' x 2'.
I plan to plant moss and riccia mostly. The idea is to keep moss, nana, windelov at one corner and the rest covered with riccia carpet at the foreground and dwarf hairgrass at the back of the foreground. It's designed for the 'zen' look of simplicity.
I think a 5' would give a more panoramic view but would prefer the height to be 1 1/2' as I think it is easier for maintenaince. I also think that that height is suitable as the light will reach the bottom (riccia and dwarf hairgrass easily) and hopefully not increase the temperature significantly to stunt the growth of the moss.
A friend who owns a 4' tank and he thinks that a height of at least 2' is more suitable for plant growth. He also thinks that maintaining a 5' tank is a lot of work.
Nevertheless, we both agree that the depth of the tank should be 2'.
I plan to use a Jebao external filter and pressurized CO2 (I have already bought these and currently am using them with my 2' tanks)
What do you all think? Sure would appreciate your comments to help me decide.
firstly, I always suggest getting the biggest tank one can afford, that will minimize chances for future upgrades :P
as for the height, 2ft should be the right height, maintenance wouldn't be really a factor, because you can always drain off the water to ease maintenance. Also, after adding your gravel and base fertilizer, you will be left with less than 2ft. Some members took that in consideration and have a 2.5ft deep tank too
i also agree with simon that 2ft tall is preferable. After adding a few inches of gravel, you don't have much depth left. Futher, you can only see the full effect of certain plants when they reach certain height..
