I am inspired to start up a planted tank after visiting aquarama last week and looking at the various works in this forum.but I have no experience as primarily I am a fish keeper.
and I wonder how much of my knowledge is transferrable. So bear with my stupid questions
can I do planted tank using an IOS tank with an underflow suction? Because I m thinking the substrate will be sucked into the filteration compartment. And potentially cloud the tank?
what will be the ideal pump rate for water circulation? My tank is about 220L.
in fish keeping, biological filtration is critical to keeping good water parameters. How about planted tank? Which is more critical, mechanical, chemical or biological filtration?
I intend to keep some small fishes like tetras and cory to spruce up the tank.
These are the questions I can think of at the moment. Thank you in advance for all the advices given![]()

@wongce, thank you for sharing your blog. Good write up there but I am still not sure if an IOS with an underflow can work for planted tank? I am still concerned about the filtration stirring up the substrate. Anybody here using IOS?
