Guys, my 1 yrs old tank yesterday suddenly turned cloudy... everything was OK earlier. On Sunday, I change water... Changing water very frequently. 1 to 2 pail every 2 days...

Filter is aged, last clean: 1month back, other than new fine sponge, nothing new added. new plants added: hairgrass...

Tank is cloudy white, not greenish, so should not be Green water right?

    what's going on?

Leave it alone for 3 days and see if it improves. The next time you change water, make sure you use anti-chlorine.

What other media do you have in your filter? Did you wash it? I'm guessing that its a bacteria bloom that came about because something you did killed the bacteria in the filter.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.

    Hi Vinz

Need some advice fr u... i just got a new filter yesterday nite... transfered the ceramic rings from the old to the new filter... jus now my wife jus called and infd me that the tank is very cloudy... could it be tt the bacteria did not survive??? shld i jus leave it alone n c whether it will clear up by itself? do i need to alter the photo period or reduce the lightings?

sorry for all the questions but I had maintained the 4-ft crystal clear fer the past half year... a bit disheartening to c the state it is in right now... all cos of my stupidity tt my old filter was damaged....

    Hi wf,

Don't worry. Do not alter your photo-period or reduce your lightings. Things should clear if you just leave it alone.

Did you wash the rings when you transfer to the new filter.
    If no is ok.
If yes, you have to wash it with your tank's water.

Furthermore, you must use your tank's water when you fill up your new filter.

If you never do the above with your tank's water, chances of killing the bacteria is high.

You can only wait for the tank to recycle.

Hi Chua... i did everything u said.... had followed the advice from the other threads strictly... but still cloudy leh....

and Geoffrey... sad to say i ask my wife to reduce two-third of the lightings @1200hrs... reach home bout 1500hrs... found some fishes stone dead at bottom while the rest dazed n the shrimps darting ard.... dunno whether was due to CO2 overdose as fergot to ask wife to off CO2 supply... immediately off CO2, ran an airline and changed 40% water... when left home earlier @1800.... fishes n shrimp more normal.... but still feel that sth is wrong.... hope later go back wun see anymore 'corpses'.....

green water in its first few days can look just like cloudy water. This is what happened to me. If it's really green water, the best way (IME) is to do a 100% reset. Change all your water. There is definitely risk to your livestock but it works for me.
Alternatively, practice a black-out. I did a black-out for 5 days (unintentionally, off the switch while overseas). All GW was gone when I came back. But plants also started dying and lots of decomposing stuff, so need to quickly remove dead organic material before other algae start to attack due to build up of organic waste.

    Hi BY

Thanks fer the advice... but i tink mine more of a case of bacteria bloom...

just to update pple here... the neons r still ORDing one by one.... i have jus removed bout 10 of them, incl those tt r somersauting... i have removed the airline... now waiting fer the lights to turn on at noon, adjust the CO2 rate n check the cloudiness of the water...

btw... one thing i did not highlight previously... my neon had actually starting dieing one by one bout a month back... they will start bloating n discolouration will occur... must be the neon disease i read in another thread.... the SAEs n shrimps were fine so i didn't add any medication to try n save the neons... tink jus panic yesterday when saw the whole lot of deaths... by this morning... seems to take it better...

might I suggest the following for neon death. Use UV lighting in your tank. they seem to improve their chances. Borrow don't buy if possible.

hehe... the cost of running the UV (excl the capital cost)... tink more than the cost of the Neons....

jus finish an hour of tidying up.... lights n CO2 all back in action.... the cloudiness almost gone liao... so far so good... no more deaths... but the remaining Neons still look lethagic... however the shrimps, SAE are active.... n the plants look okay....

will keep posting any new updates....

    thanks all fer the help....
