if you got a spare co2 tank lend him for one week. Let him see the process of photosynesis. one week later collect back from him and let him see the difference.
This is how I got into planting and get a co2 tank.

Just setup a planted Angel fish last few day (now in cyclying stage only ONE large platy inside).
Tank: 3 x 1.5 (hex tank, 3 sided front)
Gravel: lapis gravel with 1/2 small tub base fert & few handful peat moss.
Plants: Val (cockscrew), Dwarf Sag, Hygrophila ?, B. Japonica...
Filter: Atman 3335, low flow ext. cannister with surface skimmer.
Light: (currently DIYing not ready)PL 55W x 2 (> 8 hrs) + 1 pink (use only during light-off period)
Fan: Still DIYing.
fert: LG Aqua only
Fish: planning AngelFish (5-6) & malayan Shrimp (many many)
Qs:
Owner refused to invest in a CO2 tank and also refuse to do DIY CO2. So can I Solely use SeaChem Liquid Carbon and/or Sera CO2 tab. Though Econ not viable, but Owner $$$ is not mine to dispose.
Any other Alternative other then DIY CO2.

Carbo plus is fairly acceptable to some, a stick and an electrical device, uses electrolysis. No tank but need to replace the carbon block every so often.
Otherwise go with Excel.

carbon plus is not cheap either

why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

:P:P
The whole family take turn standing by the side of the tank. Use a tube blow air through it, Cheapest Co2 available... heee....ee.e.e. ha.a.a
Joking!
Cheers!

Careful about that joke, there is a fellow I know who blows into a large trash bag and uses that. I wish I could say it was a joke, but reality is far stranger than fiction.

Yes. Read that here: http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/CO2/mouth.html

Juggler's tanks

this is veryAtmospheric air mainly contains N (not very soluble in water) & O. a small percentage are gases like CO2... Bubbling atmospheric air don't actually attain anything.
The way I see it... One trash bag of human exhale air may only equal to 2 or 3 bubble worth of pure CO2... we suppose to have 2 to 3 bubble a sec...
He should try to breath in and out from the trash bag, to increase the CO2 content. but human lungs can only tolerate air with 20%+ CO2, thereafter we will be like fish which suffers from CO2 poisoning.
Anyway, I bought a 2litre CO2 tank with manual regulator @ $60. now using rate 1 - 2 bps 24/7.
