Just bought a stalk of mangrove from seaview at about 3pm today and at about 6pm, almost half the leaves have turned yellow. I placed 1 stalk in my eheim liberty and left the leaves sticking out. Anyone has any experience on growing these mangroves or is it because the mangroves I bought from seaview are not meant for saltwater tanks?

Yes bro, just trying out as my tank is very small. But the leaves all turned yellow, haha. Could it be that the leaves absorbed all the nitrates and turned yellow? I have no test kits except ph pen and refractometer.

Looks like you bought mangrove with developed leaves.
You do not know how they were kept previously, in salt or freshwater.
If saltwater, they will die if switched over to freshwater unless acclimarise it very slowly .
It is easier to get mangrove seedlings as you can grow them in freshwater easily.

Steatocranus casuarius, Hyphessobrycon erythrostigma, Hyphessobrycon sp. White Fin, Puntius denisonii, Hyphessobrycon columbianus, Hemigrammus rythrozonus,
Satanoperca Daemon, Geophagus sp. ‘tapajós red head’, Geophagus steindachneri

I see, thanks for the expert advise. I believe they were kept in freshwater as seaview seldom sells saltwater products.

Did you provide sufficient lighting for the plant?

The mangroves are placed at the HOB transparent breeder box with lightings from the front. 2x 6w T5 for 7 hours a day. Not sure if it is enough. The picture as shown below.

No need super strong lighting. Looked like they were scorched.
The leaves were there when you got them? Could be acclimatize issue as I mentioned before.
See my mangroves. Filtered sunlight. Spray water on the leaves it will have new leaves faster.

    Re: Mangrove from seaview

Hi bros, thanks again for the reply. Probably will try another forum as I am not really into saltwater tanks.

Yeah, the leaves were there when I bought them. Where did you bought your mangroves from? I am thinking of cheato but my HOB breeding tank is only 2 litres and my tank is 13 litres haha. And not really sure where to buy these items.

Is that a 2 litre Satellite hang-on external breeder box?

I was also contemplating whether it could be modified to become a nice HOB filter with really huge filtration volume, or maybe even turned into a possible emersed planter box... looks like you did it!

Yup! Its the breeder 2litre satellite box. I used it previously for my sakura shrimps to separate them from the main tank. The only problem is the low flow rate as it is using air to push the water into breeder box. I used a small little power head at the bottom to draw water into the breeder box.

Cool! Will get one soon, quite keen to try out a similar planter box setup too.
