    Re: Advice on 2ft x 1ft x 1ft tank

Thank you for all the suggestions. I kind of, think, maybe, probably know what to setup.

I did some search and it seems the dimension for Ehiem Classic 2213 based on (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...fm?pcatid=3603) is just about 6.5" in diameter and can fit the 8" space that I have.

Mostly likely going to get a 2ft x 1ft x 1ft with Ehiem Classic 2213 as the external filter. That brings another question, what's the main difference between flow glass pipe and the metal flow pipe (http://borneowild.com/prod.php?g=1&l=6&c=14) other than aesthetic wise?

As for lighting, the Pro Z series casing looks nice when placed on top of the tank with the acrylic stand, how does it compare to the green element ones for planting HC?

    @urban aquaria

That is one cool looking tank....looks acrylic? Question is why don't put the IOS to the side rather than the middle?

my guess is that it is easier to hide when it is in the centre as compared to the sides. ios at the side means got 1 less side to see..

true...than it should be made movable if the short side is actually the back and not the side.....but then again, making movable increases cost I guess.

Note that the Eheim 2213 is 35.5cm tall (around 13-14")... and your space is 8" x 10" (from the info in your first post), so it would be too tall to fit in there. Better double check the space measurements.

The metal flow pipes use a "jet" design, which is a narrow outlet, so it creates a faster flow stream, but the flow would be less spread out.

The glass flow pipes which use the "lily" design have a wide outlet, so the flow is spread out, but more gentle.

Both can grow HC... but it depends on your tank setup, if its a non-Co2 low-tech tank, then 1 unit of the Z-Series will suffice to match the slower growth pace. if you are planning to do pressurized Co2 injection and high fert dozing, then you may need to use 2 units or use the higher powered green element units to provide more light to match the Co2 and nutrients for faster growth.

I overlook the height, you are right I better measure again.

HC can be grown without co2? Solely on excel?

It seems to be designed as a nano marine tank, similar to the center-positioned IOS tower sections in larger marine tanks. I've seen a demo set with corals stacked up in the middle to hide the IOS compartment, quite nice.

I guess the same method could be used for planted tanks too, just do an island-style layout and use plants, rocks or wood in the middle to hide the compartment.

I removed the IOS compartment in my tank though, was more keen to use it as a low-profile tank with canister filter and glass lily pipes, here was my experience with it:

UA, would you suggest lily or metal for planted 2ft x 1ft x 1ft?

Possible, but you need to make sure the HC is rooted well and the tank parameters are controlled and kept very stable (ie. regulated lighting, no over-stocking of fauna and no other demanding plants competing for nutrients).

You can see a journal my HC carpet tank run without Co2 here (along with lessons learnt from the experience): http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ape-quot-Tank!

Note that i have only ever grown and maintained a HC carpet successfully without CO2 injection after doing a full DSM (dry start method) on the HC to establish their roots and create a carpet emersed... i've never had success growing it just by planting HC directly submersed in a flooded tank without CO2 injection, the newly planted HC almost always melt quickly under water without the help of Co2 injection.

I would go for glass lily pipes because of the wider flow dispersion... so at least a wider area of the tank gets water flow though it.

I've not used those narrow jet style outlets before though, but it would seem the flow with those type of outlets could tend to be more focused on where its directed, so there might end up with more dead-spots in the tank than compared with using lily pipes.

Hmmm, i've not seen any metal versions of wide lily pipe outlets though, it would be interesting if a company actually produces it.

Any idea which LFS sells those crystal clear tanks other than Green Chapter. Went to C328, the boss say they only sell one type.

You can also check at East Ocean, they have low-iron glass tanks in all sorts of different tank dimensions available.

Fishy Business also sells low-iron glass tanks... and you can even check out the real ADA tanks there too.

Also helpful UA! Real ADA should be quite out of reach lol.

I measured the "hole" in my rack 8"x11"x18". If the spec on paper is accurate, I can fit a ehiem 2215 which is 7.5x7.5x14".

BTW, C328 sells with and without media. Should I just go with the one with media, not sure what brand or should get something better?

    Re: Advice on 2ft x 1ft x 1ft tank

After going through all your suggestions, finally acquired the following:
1 . ADA 60x30x36 (cognitive dissonance, the logo is actually just a sticker not embedded...)
    2. Green Element Evo 16 x 3W led for planted tank
    3. ADA 9L soil and 3L power soil
    4. Ehiem 2215 canister filter with media. (Hopefully its sufficient for 2ft as this is the biggest I can get due to the limited space constraint)

Now, the interesting part is the Ehiem media is in loose form, meaning no net and I reckon it would be challenging to clean without netting. If I were to get new ones, what would be good media to get for this filter?
