also you can cover the tank maybe can prolong the top up
Frequent top up normally required if you are using fan. You cannot use fan if you cover the tank, thus no top up require in the first place.

yes ,fan evaporation rate quite scary , for my 7 gal i only on 8 hrs of fan , every week at least 2.5 l to top up

guess if going for holiday or business trips best to off the fan as well

Awesome Idea... I was really thinking hard what to do about topping up of water when I'm overseas for more than 2 weeks...

qngwn, I understand the concept, and this is a cost effective method for those with smaller tanks. I have a 4 footer with the cover usually on but when I do open it during hot days, the evaporation rate is insane. A typical 1.5 liter bottle with this modification would suit my purposes perfectly though I have to tweak it a little. The reference to float valves was something I was planning to do, with a reservoir below the tank but since this method is so much easier, I'd rather just go with it as a temporary solution.

Can use a floating ball valve like those inside your toilet bowl kind, just connect them to the water source (tap) and leave it on.... and hope it does not leak/ burst
