if you have extremely bright light (MH or sunlight), it could pearl even without CO2 injection, but otherwise not as a rule.

    Bro fissssshy

Riccia defintely needs bright lights and with sufficient CO2, they pearl like crazy.....

As mentioned by many, it is a high maintenance plant.... I got around the high maintenance issue by setting up a 4ft tank solely growing riccia.... at least when they break away from the netting and decided to settle somewhere else in the tank... hehe... still riccia....

When i first started, i did not have sufficient light n it was terrible... hair algae overtook the riccia and everything was a mess... but when i got the lights equation right... everything was smoother sailing....

below some pics of my 4ft Riccia tank..... comments are most welcome....

    William,

Nice tank you have there with that riccia lawn!
Are you using those plastic suckers to hold your moss mesh on the tank's wall? Any casualties with your cardinals getting trap?

    Fisssssshy,
If you are afraid of frequent prunning, you can try mini riccia, some say it requires less trimming but the same type of growing condition as riccia.

    Cheers!

Anyone that's done a fair amount with Riccia knows that it needs ripped up and re tied every so often and/or good trimming.
After a few times, many folks get tired of it.
It does grow back quick, a week or two and it looks nice again.

Moss is easier to deal with over the long term. So is using riccia and hari grass, but the Riccia will often morph and turn dark and not pearl as much.

This type of Riccia has lost it's aerynchma and will sink and not give off as much O2. This way it protects itself by sinking out of the intense light

Good CO2, light and KNO3/PO4 etc
It's not paticular about conditions as long as there's plenty there. UIt does well floating in non CO2 tanks also.

Yes, I am using those 'suckers' for the partitions left over from the Luohan era. The wall actually grows monosolenium tenerum aka Big Riccia... Since I erected the wall, there was only one casualty.... till now seems okay....

I had never trimmed the riccia since I started bout 4 months back.... fer those that broke off from the netting... i tied them to the bio-balls.... i'm trying to see how wide-spread they can get before the whole bunch breaks away from the netting....

    btw.... thanks fer your compliments.....

    cheers~~~~
