can styrofoam be used in water to raise the height of the sand instead of those plastic crates ??

Not advisable. If it leeches and or any unforeseen issues, it's right at the bottom of the tank.
Rooted plants need a certain amount of thickness to grow well.
Further to that, it's gonna float. So the amount of gravel to weight it down defeats the propose?

Styrofoam does not breakdown easily and it releases chemicals when it gets wet
that contaminates water that touches it thus contaminating the water supply.
why not, use ceramic rings to increase the height? killing 2 birds with 1 stone, increase height and space for bb to grow. either that, or use rocks or woods? can create a more natural uneven surface

but what bout those styrofoam backgrounds esp for ciclids arent those styrofoam or treated?
You can also lava chips to raise the height of the sand.

If you are going to start a planted tank, alot or aquarist do not realize that the most expensive commodity is Time.
Time to plan, time to buy hardware, time to scape and plant and time for the plant to grow.
Is it worth the time that when anything does not go as plan you always be wondering is it the foam causing this and that?
A planters worst nightmare is to tear down the tank and restart from ground zero.
If you ask me not worth for the price of an extra bag of gravel.
