A Suitable Replacement To Yamatoe Shrimps

    Hi everyone

Need some advice. My planted tank is a Altum Species Tank and unfortunately, the Altums have hunted down all my Yamatoe Shrimps.

Bought Malayan Shrimps, hunted...even glass shrimps are gone....

Is there any suitable replacement for shrimps that consume green algae (I think that is what Yamatoe shrimps consume)?

    Bristle Nose a good alternative?

    Thanks

you gotta get something big that cant fit into their mouth.. anything that can fit inside, they will eat, not just shrimps.

Re: A Suitable Replacement To Yamatoe Shrimps

@limz_777....currently just green spotting algae that grows on the glass....I think the scrapper will do the job? I am sure it will soon be on some leaves as this is still within the 3 month period where the battle between plant and algae is the most intensed?

Nope...totally gone....not one left....wife told me that it seems that they work in a pack like wolfs...one will go to the front to scare them out...the other eight seems to be waiting and once one poor shrimp jumps out thinking of escape straight into 8 other mouths.....worst of is that I have found either suicidal shrimps (jump out of tank) and half eaten ones in the tank.

@qugwn...I got 4 ottos and the Altums left them alone 2 whiptail cat which of course too big.....they left the 2 pairs of aspitos alone even though the female seems small enough to fit the mouth.....I dare not put in pencil fish as Simon has experience with Altums eating them....SAEs will be a nuisance once they get bigger...bristle nose not easy to find nowadays...running out of options....

Oh Gosh!!!....so my ottos are going to be a matter of time...there goes my plan getting zebra ottos.....

I heard of Nerite Snails....correct me if I am wrong, they have a habit of crawling out of the tank? and will they quickly themselves become a problem? Lastly I have no idea how they look like....

Re: A Suitable Replacement To Yamatoe Shrimps

My nerites are fine. They do crawl out, but once they have dried their shells they will go back into the water. Many have said that it's a PH issue where the water is too soft for their liking.

Nerites do lay eggs in freshwater, but the eggs are known to hatch in brackish water. Have had my nerites for more than a year. I love them very much cos the perpetually keep the surfaces algae free! I also get them to help clean algae on rocks when I decommed my iwagumi tank.

You can visit LFS. Most of them call then horned (nerite) snail, or also bumblebee snail.

Yup. They stay small. Largest is 4 inches. Buy the smaller one and they are hardworking. Also, buy the male (with chew chew) only. You do not want them to spawn

In C328, auntie keep them in fighting fish tank

The nerite snail there is a zebra nerite snail. It is not commonly seen in LFS in SG. Try searching for "horned nerite snail" and you'd get what you'd see in our LFSs.

Yes this is the one that I have, some LFS also have the non striped version of this as well.

For me, my nerites clean all surface algae, including BBA..

Not sure what the other does as I have never kept them before.

Re: A Suitable Replacement To Yamatoe Shrimps

thanks qngwn....and where do I go with the highest chance of getting them...C328?

Just to push my question alittle further, what would be a good amount to buy for a 120x50x60?

    Water Temp = 27 to 28

    Water PH = 6.5 to 6.7

At this temp and PH is it suitable?

east ocean aquatic has nerites, 2nd picture is a spotted bristlenose pleco, y618 had them

edit: my standard 3 feet has 5 nerite, 2 bn pleco and 6 oto, algae still grow on glass, It's slightly controlled in a sense that only 1 side has it, other 3 glass are clean. bn pleco wise... didn't see them sticking to my glass, so you might want to think twice about them

I stay in the north, so Y618 is the place I always visit. They always have stocks for these snails. 5 for $5.

The amount of snail, would largely depend on the amount of surface algae you have for them. You can always buy some to try to see if your fishes eat them :/

Good luck! dont panic if you dont see them cos your tank is so big. if you're afraid that the fishes might eat the snails or attack them, you can get the bigger ones instead of the juvenille ones.
