I recently got this random green stem plant from a LFS plant tank (those $1 per pot ones), added it into one of my new tanks to try out... as usual no label or name for it at the LFS.

After a week it grew around 5-6cm taller, quite a fast grower, can see the thinner and brighter submersed leaves distinctly, compared to the larger and duller bottom emersed leaves. Each node has 3 leaves.

    A view from the top...

I've been comparing it to plant photos online but can't seem to find a positive match.

Can any plant experts help ID this plant?

    Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions... i narrowed down the online photo searches to those 2 plants and it seems to have most of the same characteristics as Rotala Nanjenshan, the number of leaves per node, emersed leaf and submersed leaf shapes look like they match with the plant in my tank.

    Appreciate the help!

I have the same plant in my tank. The new growth leaves are much thinner than the existing leaves. It grows really fast and I think it was one of the reasons (together with liquid carbon) why algae was kept under control in my tank. I'll definitely use it again my next tank to absorb excess nutrients...

when you trim from the top, does it grow back from where it was trimmed or it branches out several new nodes?

Yes, i trimmed some of the tops a few days ago to balance out their heights and it does grow back very quickly, some cut nodes also sprout new branches too, so regular pruning will eventually create a bushy effect at the top.

Interestingly, the ones i have seem to be randomly sprouting out alot of new branches on their own midway along their stems, even without pruning.

Yeah, its really confusing to buy plants from most of the LFS, they never label them and the staff also have zero knowledge, so end up everyone just have to plant and grow them by trial and error.
