t4 tube means the diameter of the tube is 4/8" or 0.5in
    t5 tube has a diameter of 5/8"
    t8 tube is 8/8" or 1in
    t12 tube is 12/8" or 1.5in
t12 is the older technology while t4 is newer if not newest.

the ballast rating should be 58w and 40w.
doubt there are 55w and 36w ballast.
a higher rating ballast can support a lower rating tube.
but a lower rating ballast cannot support a higher rating tube.

    I am curious also.

Does the T4,T5,T8,T12 naming convention applies to the normal straight FL lights we see?
Or do they also apply to PLL lights? There's a T4 PL light in the market, right?
Or what about those odd-shaped bulbs at this sticky thread http://www.aquaticquotient.com/phpbb...ic.php?t=11784

i believe the t4, t5, t8 and t12 naming convention should apply to fl tubes only.
when pl was introduced, there wasn't any t appended to pl.
