Recent studies shows that putting recent studies in your statement have a higher percentage of trust people put into your recent studies. What?
you'll get algae
you don't want to do that, algae, algae and algae![]()
your water will turn green and livestock turn pale, then they will try to do underwater ballet

Ok..thanks guys....what would happen if I have very little hours of light supply or no light for few days ...

plants would starve for abit and weaker or more light demanding ones will slowly turn brown, just like what will happen if you're not fed for a day or two

Algae will grow more then your plants will, soon walls of the tank will have GSA happily growing.
photosynthesis itself will only last a certain amount of hours per day. don't recall the exact 8-10 hours.
Regards to no light, you would not see any difference if it's a day or 2 on low requirement plants. Stem plants will bend to ANY light source. Longer term some plants will just melt.
Likewise on course with your questions of opposite nature, mind sharing the reason behind them ?

Sometimes I did 24x2 (3 days) once in a while if I forgot to switch off permanent light button. For 24 x 7 light on, I would expect higher electricity bill.
Sometimes I also forgot to switch on the light timer for few days (4-5 days), some plants may melt or turn yellowish.![]()
So may I ask what is good timing to set? Light on from 2pm to 10pm? Total 8 hours per day? Thank you
I guess it depends on when you will be home to enjoy.
I used to do 10-12 hours without co2 and ended up an algae tank. These days I use a timer and kept it at 5 hours light period, my lighting period starts at the same time my official working hours end. I get to enjoy the tank when I'm home.
You should also check if there are any sunlight ray that will hit your tank during the day, I read somewhere that has some
Impact too.
I think there is no hard and fast rule regarding lighting duration. It usually seats between 6 hours to even 12 hours of 'lights on' period . It depends on the intensity of light as well as the color temperature of the lights.
Lights, governs the rate or growth of plants...the more lights by means of intensity and or duration, the faster rate or growth. With a faster rate of growth, it demands more nutrients and the most important of all is CO2.
This means that if the amount of nutrients be it in water column or substrate and CO2 cannot support the rate or growth, the plant either does not grow well or shuts down. When that happens, Algae has the advantage and takes over. The plant species mix in one given tank is also important low light plants and high light plants do not mix well. This comes full circle with newer lighting technology that gives the ability to control the intensity of lights through sunrise to sunset cycles giving opportunity for this two kinds of plants to thrive in any one tank.
In a nutshell, it is partly an art and partly a science to derive at the optimism lighting duration. In my opinion, lights is the catalyst that triggers photosynthesis which needs to be fueled by nutrients and CO2.
In the improper balance of any of the 3, especially lights will end up with algae at the doorstep.
These are my thoughts

All living thing in this world are the same, the amount of energy intake must be equal or more that its used. If the intake less then the usage, it become skinnier. For plant growth, the energy produce during photosynthesis must be more than the energy use when it is not doing photosynthesis. So if the light hour too short or too dim, the energy produce is not enough for them to use overnight, become stunt and die.
Hello gurus. Can anyone explain the reason behind a "siesta" period? Is that necessary?
"Speed of light is faster than the Speed of sound"
Thus people always appear brighter until they speak!
Siesta not necessary if you have CO2 injection. However siesta is good to have or even recommended in non CO2 injection tank. The idea is during light OFF period CO2 start to build up and ready to use for the next light ON. Thus you cannot have too short OFF period.
your water level will decrease like siao
