Self sufficient ecologically balanced aquarium

Hi all,

Been thinking about this concept on and off for sometime already..

According to my web research, not much material

The concept is simple but the undertaking is otherwise-

"to create and maintain a self sustaining population of prey fauna which numbers are kept in check by a small population of predators"

Anyone has accomplished such a feat?
Or at least attempted or conceptualized it?

A simple example would be this: well cycled planted tank with established sizeable population of cherry shrimps kept in check by a suitable predator that wouldn't deplete the prey.
