if you hang it, should be able to spread to the 2ft, note, you need mhx, green element evo quad not evo only.

I am planning to start a new project. Therefore, for lights, i am planning to use Odyssea Evo Series 3 Watts LED Lights. My plan is to start a 3ft x 2ft x2ft, will one 3ft be able to cover the 2ft width?
Is anyone currently using the led lights, care to share your experience?

from what i read off the net, the led light is not focused optics. which means the 2ft depth may be an issue.
Are you intending to start a planted tank with low carpeting plants?
From
http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...29-Plant-White
for a 2ft tank, the advertiser used 2 X 2ft lights. and its only 40 cm breadth.
I am balding but i am still young!
yes, there's no lens. but with optic lens, the spread is reduced, which you will naturally hang up, which in turn, reduce penetration power. if you stay in the west, you can drop by my house on my off day to see. the Singapore set before commiting. my tank is 3x1x1 with the light sitting on it. light sort of overflow from the front and back of tank.

@bennyc, get the mhx 4 row. quite good , but imho lose to t5 in terms of pearling but no loss of plant growth.
if you can spare more, get the razor. come with better electronic controller and fan.

I am currently using t5 for my 2ft. I feel that it very hot and over time the light brightness drop quite fast. Therefore for the new project, i am thinking of switching to led.
To be honest, i am already reachning my maximum amount i am willing to spend for the evo 3w. So buying 2 unit or the mhx version might not be an option.
Sigh ... Feel so depressed.
Razor is like 600+ right? Hmmm....
Thanks all for sharing.
@ berny, thanks for your kind offer.

t5 the cost in long term is high due to replacement frequency.
pay what your heart can part with, work around that amount. belive me that if you have some success in the hobby you will find the funds.
think you can refer the price from delightings website.
while your looking at that set, take note that their led is using optics and focus not the same as mhx.

most mhx doesn't have a lens to focus the beam, thus lesser concentration and penetration. since your height is 2', penetration plays a very important role.
think about it this way, flat mirror vs concave (or was it convex?) mirror, which has more focus? like the magnifying glass using sunlight to burn dried leaf.

Just "revise" David post on the review of his maxspect razor. Its' lights are overkill for his tank?
Anyway i plan to have carpeting plants such as UG.
How about 1 evo 3w set for 3x 1.5 x 1.5 ? Or MHX is still neccessary?

Hey bennyc,
As advised by Felix and Berny, whom both are current users of the MHX, a double row Green Element Evo will not be sufficient if you are looking to cover the whole width of the tank.
As LEDs are much directional as compared to standard fluorescent tubes, with just two rows, you will need to hang it higher for the whole width to be covered. Hanging higher would also mean loss of light intensity.
If you are getting two rows only, it's either:
- increase in spread, decrease in intensity hanging it much higher than usual
- decrease in spread, increase in intensity by hanging on the tank as per normal
To solve the above issue, some have turned to using 2 sets of 2 row Green Element, or using 1 MHX, which is 4 rows.
2 sets of 2 row LEDs will allow you to shift the lights to where you would like the light to focus on, while the MHX should be sitting just right in the middle to provide equal spread.
Hope the info above helps you
Buy it once, buy it right! or else later buy and buy and buy, in the end spend even more.![]()
@qngwn, My brain is tell me to buy it right but my heart or should i say my wallet is bleeding out.
by the way, between MHX (435 + 50+ 50 + 18 + 33 = $586) or Razor ($648 ) are very close in price, i will choose the latter.
MHX + 2 fan + hanging kit+ timer (not sure 1 or two is needed) equals to the razor set.
All prices are already listed online, hope i am not breaking any forum rules.

You would only need one timer, as the timer overrides the switch. one switch = one timer.
Indeed they are close in price, but they do have their pros and cons.
Perhaps some questions that you will help you decide
- would you need to set dawn to dusk?
- would you want a evenly spread lighting, or "spot" lighting as the lights are clustered for the razor.
- are you particular about looks that you are willing to forgo the above pros/ cons?
If you dont mind shipping from overseas to get the best of both worlds, do check out the newest version of QMAVEN by Zetlight.
It has everything the Razor has, with the addition that lights are spread out, and you are able to have full control over RGB LEDs, adjusting the necessary wavelengths you need.
Price wise it should be around that of razor.

Thanks, this is a really comprehensive analysis.

bennyc, 2 fans don't completely cool the unit. but they produce alot of noise if your gonna get 3.
im using 2 , quite good at keeping the set cool.
optics on razor are not removable. meaning to increase coverage. you need to hang the unit.
if you played with laser pointers that can focus. the idea is more or less same.
having used both types before, how i wish have 6 rows with optics soon.. if you find the differences not much but can't fork out, just save longer.
doubt I'll be online much tomorrow, posting from chalet now hehe.

Thanks felix, ask you more questions, when you are back then.
Enjoy your chalet.![]()

The EVOs have a configuration where by they do not use optics, but just an acrylic sheet to protect the LEDs.
Razor comes with optics, where they cannot be removed unless modified.
Without optics - light spread around 120 to 150 deg, intensity reduced due to spreading of the light.
With optics - lens range from around 60 to 120 deg, light intensity is increased due to the focusing of the lights, with intensity more uniform across the light spread.
Don't have much of a choice if yore buying it off the shelves haha, but hope it can help you make a better choice!

Thanks! I think I will downsize the plan to 3 x 1.5 x1.5. I shall go down to east ocean to see if 1 evo 3w 3ft is able to light up the entire 1.5ft width.
