This is my 3ft planted discus tank ..

Front view of the tank. Yes, the front is rather bare. Gotta wait for wendtii to
    s....l.....o....w.....l....y fill up the space.

MM, DD and Wendtii. Crinum is behind DD.

Java fern is on the wood. Behind the wood are C. Balansae (which melts like
there's no tomorrow ). Sprawling on the water surface is A. Ulvaceus.

This is the dominant discus in the tank. It's a Turquoise.

This was during quarantine in March 04. They are now in the planted tank, hiding
at the back in the first pic. They are Leopards.

    All comments welcome ..

    Cheers!

yo, the wendtii s' gonna take a real long time, why not add more? If you are lazy with foreground, maybe moss on rocks?

The wendtii started with abt 50 plants, now left abt 20. All melted. Perhaps it's time to get more

Nice fish...and good open space for the discus

Agreed with lorba on the moss with rocks,I think that would be better the the crypto wendtii.

IMHO, leave some bare-gravel areas in the forground for the Discus to feed.

    Thanks for the suggestions

I wanted more open space for the discus to swim about.

The open space in front is for them to feed. But somehow mine are such efficient eaters nowadays, so much so that the tetra bits never touched the gravel during feeding time!

    Slightly off topic ...

Can you give us a few close-up shots on your 'wendtii'? The regular wendtii we get in LFSs/farms here (e.g. green, brown, tropica, mi oya) are quite hardy and I've never seen them melt down in the manner you have described - 30 of 50 plants. The petiole is rather long for a wendtii. This is something I only see in my low-light setups but this tank is unlikely to be low-light given how lush your MM and DD are growing (am I correct?)

    Hi Theodore,

This tank gets 1.9wpg. It's not very bright. Perhaps that's the reason for the long petiole ?

DD quite lush & bushy at this light level, but it only turns red at the tips only when it's near the surface (nearer to the lights).

MM was newly planted and given by my friend. If you think this is lush, you should see his. Amazingly beautiful bunch!

    oic.

But i thought the upper portion of DD should look red or pink.

Can't really see the redness in the pics. Maybe it takes some time as it is newly relandscaped.

All the best and keep us update after the tank is fully developed.

By the way, side track a bit, do you have to change your water very often, since it sounded like you've been feeding them regularly?

And, do you experience heavy bioload problem?

    Cheers,

    Leslie.

    Hi Chua,

Ya, the tips of DD should be pink. But I guess for mine, they are at mid levels (which makes them not near the lights) and my NO3 levels aren't really lean (with twice feedings daily and 8ppm NO3 stock every 2 days). So, mine stays green. I like the color nevertheless.

Thanks for the kind comments. Will try to post more pics when the tank matures.

    Hi Leslie,

I change the water once every 10-12 days. I once pushed it to 14 days but my discus didnt like that. The stress bars were all showing then.

    Cheers!
