May I ask if your Opae Ula breed? Can share your experience and give some advice? Thanks.

Slowly I added some brackish water, scoop by scoop, over the last few hours. Just now I checked and it had turned upside down. I quickly changed the water to fresh water from the cherry shrimps tank. Not sure whether it can be rescued. Is there something wrong with the brackish water? Is there something I must do when transferring horn snail from fresh water to brackish water? Sigh...
The horn snail started to move again. Now, it is back to the cherry shrimps tank. Hope it will be okay. Hmm, what went wrong?

I just started few months back so far no breeding. But heard is not that easy to breed them but it can be done. And once they breed, it will breed like rabbits.
    Anyway I am still learning

Oops... I made a blunder. What I bought was aquarium salt, not marine salt. This monring, I bought Red Sea Salt as what oiishi had used. I have been exchanging water between the new tank and the bottle for the last few days. Luckily, the shrimps are okay. The snail looks okay too. Now, I have to redo the tank. Lesson learned.

    Re: Marimo and Volcanic Shrimp

Just transferred my four Opae Ula from the bottle to the new tank this morning. The following video was taken one hour after they moved to their new home.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frA_SzCXsFg

They were very active, swimming around non-stop, exploring their new home. The tank is more than 20 times bigger than the bottle. There is a small Dophin H80 hanging filter, one lava rock, one marimo, some coral sticks and shells. The salinity level is 1.006. Will increase it to 1.010 slowly. Hope for the best!

    Re: Marimo and Volcanic Shrimp

Haha, maybe you are right that they are trying to get out but this tank is already much bigger than the bottle they used to live in. According to some websites, my tank can accommodate about 100 of them as they are very sociable animal.

All four are still very active, swimming non-stop, seldom stop at one spot for more than a few seconds. Very puzzled how they can be so energetic while eating so little. They are very different from cherry shrimps which seem to be eating most of the time. They are just swimming around all the time, going through the space among the coral sticks and shells and sometimes through the current too. They are not hiding and seldom stops at the lava rock or the marimo.

They are now redder than before. I guess this is a good sign. From what I read, they can grow up to 1/2 inch i.e. about 13 mm. Mine are only 7 to 10 mm long. This could be due to starvation for the past 16 months while living in the bottle, the so-called ecosystem. I am guilty for that. I tried to feed them two type of pellets that I use to feed my cherry shrimps but they don't seem to like them. Will have to find some other food for them. Please let me know if you have any suggestion. Thanks.

How do you increase salinity? Adding aquarium salt?
I keep sulawesi shrimps, tetras, birds, exotic pets, herptiles and monster fishes.

As of now, they are still swimming around non-stop. Surprisingly, they seem to be okay with the current. Sometimes, they swim to the current and let it carry them down like what you can see in the video. Initially, I was worried that they may be hurt but so far they are okay. Occasionally, I turn the filter flow to be the max for a while but leave it at min most of the time. Enjoy watching them! Great!

Marine salt not aquarium salt. I am using Red Sea Salt, following what oiishi has been using.

    Re: Marimo and Volcanic Shrimp

As what oiishi predicted, the shrimps finally settled down today. After swimming non-stop for days, they have slowed down (although still swim around a lot) and are busy scavenging for food now. One of them just molted as there is a discarded shell in the tank.

    Re: Marimo and Volcanic Shrimp

In another forum, someone (based on his posts, he seemed to be a veteran) claimed that marimo could not survive in brackish water for long as it would rot slowly from inside. I googled and at least 2 websites mentioned that marimo preferred brackish water. Now, I am confused. Has anyone in this forum ever kept marimo in brackish or salt water for a long time e.g. more than a year? Thanks.

I just placed a sponge at the filter outlet to reduce the water flow as someone said the shrimps would not breed if there was current in the tank.

They seemed to enjoy the algae wafers (contains spirulina) I just bought for them.

    Re: Marimo and Volcanic Shrimp

I noticed that Opae Ula are able to carry a small piece of food with them using their legs for hours while swimming around. They may have develop this special skill as food is scarce at their natural habitat. Any other shrimps have this ability?

The salinity is now at 1.010.

    Hi

I had kept those shrimps for a while ..... Marimo ball will survive ... the problem with keeping these shrimps are
    1) if you overload the tank with shrimps, algae will start growing and it wont be a nice experience to clean them
    2) dont think is wise to put a filter because they prefer stagnate water and easily die if there are constant disturbance in the water
    3) Their waste have to be constantly clean or the tank will look very dirty
    4) They need alot of hiding places and usually dont come out, unless there are disturbance or food

I used to have a tank of 150 shrimps in a 1 x1 feet tank and barely can see any .... Everything was nice until many months later when the algae and the amount of waste made my tank very messy ... So i end up de-com the tank ...

    Re: Marimo and Volcanic Shrimp

Most said Opae Ula preferred calm water. It is true that the water at their natural habitat (pond) is pretty calm. But look at the following video:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8pyo5tfuxY

They seemed to enjoy it, didn't they?

Before I put a sponge at my filter outlet, my opae ula also swam near the filter outlet and let the flow carry them down many times as shown in the following video (at 30 seconds).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frA_SzCXsFg

Maybe they don't really dislike the water flow??? Maybe it is okay to have some water flow at part of the tank???
