Washing canister filter.

Like to check with all the experts here who have canister filter. How often do you wash your canister filter? I was told every 3 months for a planted tank. Is that enough ?

And I am getting one for my 2 feet tank. Do you suggest Fluval or Ehiem? And which models.

Sorry for asking so many questions. I need advices.

some every 2-3 months. regular cleaning to prevent choke.

i clean only when flowrate drop too much due to choke. so far only once every 7-8months. im using over powered and mostly media.

Filter maintainence every 3 months is a good practice for planted tanks, helps prevent debris from building up too much in the canister filter. It also depends on your plant density and bio-load.

If you install a pre-filter sponge or mesh guard on the intake pipe, then you dont need to clean the canister filter as often, because the sponge/mesh guard traps most of the debris before they get into the filter... just need to clean the intake guard every few days (you'll usually start seeing lots of dirt and leaves accumulating on it even after just a few hours).

And I am getting one for my 2 feet tank. Do you suggest Fluval or Ehiem? And which models.

I've only used Eheim canister filters so far, so can only comment on that brand... have had good experience with the Classic, Ecco Pro and Professional series models.

For standard 2ft tanks (ie. 60P dimensions, 60x30x36cm), the models which range between 500-750 litres per hour flow rate would be ideal.

Here are the ones i've used and worked well for 2ft tanks:

Eheim Classic 2215 (620 l/ph) - Simplest design, but no double taps (you'll need to buy them separately) and no priming/air purge feature (have to use manual priming method).

Eheim Ecco Pro 130 / 200 / 300 (500-750 l/ph) - All have in-built swivel mounted double taps, priming/air purge feature and pre-filter ring system. If no storage/height or budget constraint, best to go for the largest 300 model.

Eheim Professional 2224 (700 l/ph) - Large filter volume, fixed position double taps, but no priming/air purge feature (have to do the manual priming method).

The above mentioned models are all relatively close in price (usually just $20-$30 difference between models), so i guess the choice mainly depends on what features you are keen on.

petroleum jelly only on o-rings and moving parts (if removeable)

buy vaseline, good for cuts and it's great as a lube

this vaseline is those branded one? got nice scent and all i thought is full of chemicals no?

i watched some youtube guides and they recommended silicone grease. I believe silicone grease is used for o-rings in scuba gear, so if you have friends who are divers, they probably have a source.

Looking at prices, silicone grease is more expensive than vaseline, wonder if there is a reason why divers use silicone grease and not petroleum jelly?

If available in Singapore for $2, its a good deal, don't have to buy a huge tube and only use a tiny bit. Every fewsmonths open one disposable 1oz tube. Next time I pop into a dive shop I shall see if they sell this.

I haven't wash my Ehiem for over a year. I have a pre-filter installed before the inlet of my main filter. I just change the wool of my pre-filter.

It depends if you have any pre filter prior to the canister. Rule of thumb will be perform periodical check at canister to see if it needs some cleaning. You will know roughy when to clean over a period of time.
