Would need some advice. I am getting a 3 feet tank with maxspect 160w light. Room temperature would be around 27-29 degrees. Is a chiller really necessary due to budget constraints?

Re: is it necessary to get a chiller?

Aquatic plants generally do better at lower temperature between 25C to 27C.

To answer your question, you could do with just a aquarium fan and pick plants that are not too fussy about temperature.

Basically a chiller opens up all possibility to all aquatic plants and your success ratio increases.

    I don't see why not. I have used fan for a 120 x 45 x 45.

Just that it gets noisy, evaporate water faster and on really hot days...you need a bag of ice to help out.

I'm keep a 3 feet at home using a kotobuki fan which should be more for a 2 feet.

temperature with fan on 24/7 is 27d low and 29.5d high. keeping glosso & ludwidga only.

quite a number of plants grow nicer in cooler waters, but its not a must tp go chiller... if in doubt, may I suggest you take a small tour of my picture blog and look at my 3 feet.

Re: is it necessary to get a chiller?

Running a chiller be nice but not a must in my opinion. For myself, instead of utilising a chiller which consumers power with no immediate tangible benefit to me and also adds some background hum to the household, I opted to utilise the airconditioning instead....

This way, we benefit - stay cool, and the tank achieves a lower water temp

Re: is it necessary to get a chiller?

Does not effective work this way Stressed....room ambient and the tank ambient temperature are very different because the media is different...air and water.

Heat gain or loss are at very different rate between the two media. Unless you are talking about leaving the air con on 24/7, perhaps it might work. Than again the electrically bill is also going to be very different.

I'm contemplating to use a chiller for my 2ft tank. Any guru can shed some light approximately how many percent more on the power bill if I intend to run chiller? I do not want get a heart attack.

Re: is it necessary to get a chiller?

@Aventador...its difficult to give you an estimate because it all depends on the brand of chiller, your set temperature, your ambient temperature, where you put your tank and chiller. All I know is that its not going to bust your bank account.

You might want to add around $50 extra to your monthly utility bill for a start. However, on cold rainy day, the chiller operation frequency might be lesser compared to the hot months.

It depend on your tank size also, 3x1.5x1.5ft using artica 1/10hp increase about S$10 per month. Bigger tank require bigger hp (horse power) thus require more electricity.

Re: is it necessary to get a chiller?

Thanks for all the inputs. I reckon a low HP chiller would be sufficient enough for my moderate planted 2ft tank.

They are more expensive at the onset. However, they are more efficient when to comes to running cost.

PS: perhaps you give Rachel a call and ask her?.....WHAHAHAHHA!!!!!
