Potential mosquito breeding problem?

This morning, I discovered a mosquito floating on the surface of my fish tank.

It flew away upon irritation by my hands.

Tank habitants are

02 x angelfishes.
03 x Otto fishes
02 x loach fishes

filter.

01 x fluval c4 hof

This incident really made me wonder about the statement about mosquito need still water to lay eggs.

Need advice from fellow forumers regarding this..

larvae stage cannot live in moving water.
they need to breath thus the need for stagnant water. else they will drown....

Ok. Maybe I got too uptight when I saw an alive mosquito floating happily on a moving water surface.

All the way, I thought it is only possible for mosquito to float on a still water surface.

Mosquito larvae are yummy snacks for fish. It wont survive more than 2hrs on aquariums.

they may not be mosquito. adult midge flies looks like mosquito, able to lay eggs on still or moving water and their pupa stage resembles mosquito pupa stage. only difference is that their larvae is red in color. i have an issue with them before in my shrimp tank. http://www.mosquitoes.org/Midge.html

It would be wonderful if they keep laying their eggs there regularly, because your fish will surely appreciate and relish the larvae delicacies.

Highly unlikely, as the tiny larvae will have almost zero chance of growing in the fish tank. They would be eaten by fish fry the moment they hatch.

Mosquito larvae is like free food. This one NEA won't even have time to come disturb! Your angels will be waiting like ' come on, come on... hatch already'!

As long as there is fish in the tank, mosquito larvae won't stand a chance to grow....

What if I leave my tank to cycle for 2 months? Will mosquito be a problem? Cos I'm planning to let my tank cycle when I'm away.

Yeah, without any small fishes in the tank, its very likely mosquitoes will breed in the tank. Even with surface water movement from the filter, there will usually still be some areas with low or no surface movement, so the larvae will survive there.

Covering the tank with mosquito netting would be a good idea, and perhaps asking someone to help check on the tank at least once a week to detect mosquitoes breeding.

Cycle means your filter is on, and surely that would cause surface agitation to prevent mosquito breeding If you're worried then point your filter out flow at the surface, that would be enough to prevent any Mosquitos and cycling would require a source of ammonia... You might need to add more fish food every week or so or more ammonia.

If you really worry about the mosquitoes just put 1 pair of guppy or platy,
these are hardy fishes they can survive through the cycling process.
