I have always thought marine have better toys than freshwater. Looking at the micron sock, i was thinking if there is a way to use it in our tank that has no sump. Is there a way to have it in a canister filter?

Anyone, use micron sock before? Does the fine "holes" get bigger over time?

    Re: Micron socks in canister.

For my household drinking water, I buy 3M 0.5micron filter cartridges from amazon.com for about US$30+ which provides 6 months of filtered water supply. I pre-filter it with the regular 50micron water filter (similar to the link below).

if you are looking for a freshwater micron filter for aquarium, then why not adapt regular household water filters as micron filters?

something like this. Instead of using it as a CO2 reactor, you install the usual micron filter:

micron sock can be wash, if i am not wrong, so it can be use for a long period of time. the model you showed uses micron filter cartridge. Difficult for me to gauge when it needs to be changed and expensive per cartridge.

Micron socks and micron filter cartridges are different. The micron socks unable to filter micron size particles. Micron filter cartridges best to throw once used for 6 months or depends on your usage.

good quality micron socks have holes that retain their size over a longer period of time.

I did not use it in canisters before. but i used them in a pre filter before. its another failed experiment.

The sock got "stuck" after 1 week and i did not notice. so after the first week, motor was running but no water was moving.. eversince then my jebao became SLOWbao.
    Sigh.

Micron socks have their uses but in a freshwater setup, having one in a pre-filter or in your canister filter can lead to severe performance issues later on. Imagine trying to suck water through a clogged pipe.. it's nearly impossible. Worst case scenario is seeing your impeller get spoiled, or worst, overheated motor unit which becomes impossible to use. Might be easier to just run part of your output into a micron sock as it drains back into the tank. That way, if the sock gets clogged (which is easy to see), you can remove it easily with no risk to your canister.

I use it on my canister out take right after I clean and turn on my canister.
Because that is the time when all the mini nasty brown looking dirt get push from the canister into my tank...
I will only remove it after 15mins of operation or when I deem the water flow is clean
