So today, my younger brother went prawning at east coast with his friends, aft he came back home and placed the prawns in the fridge for about 30min, i was curious on his catch so i took it out and started to look at each prawn, determining their gender lol. All of them are Cold and hard already, but to my surprise, one of the females started bubbling from its mouth !
So i immediately Grabbed a Big and Deep bucket, filled it with water at the temperature i thought was most similar to normal prawn ponds and then shaking the prawn to *wake up* . aft about 5min its swimmerets started to move !!!

Aftwards, i held the prawn ever so lightly in my palm and then moved it forward and back, stimulating the movements when a prawn is swimming, so finally aft 30min of resting and movin the shrimp back and forth. It was Alive.

As i dont have a air pump to put in the bucket, i tossed it into my tank, its alive now and i am interested to see how long it will last, getting a airpump tomorrow for the prawn its now recovering from its exhaustion for hanging tough without water.

Furthermore, it was alive even aft my bro went for dinner ! hanging tough for around 2 hours OMG . Hope it survives
Always there to help even if i can't i'll try my best to

The prawns stocked at the East Coast prawning pond are freshwater Macrobrachium rosenbergii. I caught some the last time I was there. The reason that female survived is that there was enough moisture in the gills of the shrimp that allowed it to respirate.

Those live prawns from ponds make even amano shrimps look so small in comparison... if just based on weight vs cost ratio, they really make our tiny "ornamental" dwarf shrimps look grossly overpriced.

    Re: What a surprise !

Wow, I hope this prawn manages to survive! I always thought that they made a suitable alternative to crayfishes.

It's a shame that this species is now considered extinct in the wild in Singapore. The giant freshwater prawn was apparently formerly native to our rivers, but after many of these waterways were turned into concrete canals and/or dammed up to create reservoirs, they were unable to reproduce* and died out sometime after the 1980s.

*Like many of the shrimps found in the trade, the larvae of giant freshwater prawns require brackish water in order to develop properly. Gravid females would migrate downstream towards estuaries and river mouths to release their young, and the young prawns would make their way up into freshwater and mature into adults. Damming most probably interrupted their movements and left them unable to complete their life cycle.

As an aside, the giant freshwater prawns might turn out to be a completely different species; this paper indicates that there are two distinct "types" of Macrobrachium rosenbergii, one found in India and Southeast Asia (including the islands of Borneo, Sumatra and Java), the other found in the rest of Indonesia (i.e. Bali and Sulawesi and everything else further east), the Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Australia. The giant freshwater prawns raised for food and for our prawn ponds apparently belong to the "western" type, and has since been described as a separate species, Macrobrachium dacqueti.
    Small is beautiful.

Keep the prawn alive before freezing it, this will ensure the freshness too
