    Hi fellow hobbyists,

Just recently set up a simple mossy scape. Its a 2ft tank. I aim for all my plants to be either tied onto rocks/wood or just simply in their original pot for easy rescaping. They have no choice but to get their nutrients from the water. The goal of this tank is to keep budget shrimps and healthy plants(whichever species I favour) and moss for viewing pleasure. Tonina is here because this is a plant I really adore! Am also trying out my favorite weeping moss which is tied to a branch like driftwood at the back. There's anchor moss, mini fissidens, mini pelia and Christmas moss too. Other plants are present for taking up the excess nutrients. I'm looking to add more variety of moss.

The current inhabitants are low grade crs, tiger shrimps, princess shrimp, yamatoes, otos and pipefish.

Filtration is through low cost HOF with filter media. I have added c02 at 1bps and lightings are 2x24watt. The tank is illuminated 4-5hours a day. It has been around 10 days since set up. Currently experiencing a little bit of hair algae but with my bit experience in dealing algae, i think i should be able to solve it.

    Enjoy!

not too tough, just wrap moss around the rock/wood and tie it. the moss will grow and fill up the gaps

Very nice. Is 4 to 5 hours a day enough for growth?

    Helps in combating algae growth..
To a certain extent, yes if your water column is high in nutrients and the plants are not able to take them in fast enough.
However not all algae growth are due to excess nutrients, but rather fluctuations in water parameters, like ammonia, or co2.
knowing the root cause will help to eliminate and prevent algae..

Oh i see, i feel the stronger the lighting, the easier it is to get algae growth. Start off slow with the lighting by controlling the duration of the photoperiod. Nowadays, i start with 3-4 hours lighting per day then slowly increase the duration once my plant mass increases. The plants still grow and algae are kept at a minimum.

There must also be adequate flow/current within the aquarium.

Do monitor your tank daily and if you spot the growth of algae, identify the kind of algae and tackle the problem from there.

Re: Simple Mossy 2ft Shrimp Playground

    HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Some updates on the tank.. Tank requires minimal maintenance which is what i desire now, mosses are generally growing healthily with little algae. I do have some hair algae and BBA but its mainly on the mini pelia. I take them out individually to treat them. Meanwhile, the fauna consists of yamatoes, low low grade crs, chocolates and the mini pipe fish. Oh, and a killer snail. I am planning to add more mosses in, but haven't got the chance to visit lfs to choose some wood.

Anyone wants the Tonina? Its there initially to suck up the nutrients. Willing to trade for a litre of Fresh Milk or give FOC !

The mini pelia is recovering as i took it out for treatment earlier and put it too long in hydrogen peroxide to kill some hair algae.

Sold to me as Xmas moss, BUT! i highly doubt it.

My favourite moss inside. Sold to me as Anchor Moss. I have a few rocks with it now. It does resembles Layer Moss.

My Chocolates Parents.. Makes me a grandparent.
