puffer are professional snail killers ... enuff said![]()
Hi,
I have a 4ft fully planted tank. I am experiencing a snails explosion. Don't know where they come from, but I have not added new plants for the past 2 months. However, I did some re-scaping.
I have 2 Yo-Yo loach and 1 stripey loach, but they do not seem to be eating the snails.
I am considering adding a small puffer to get rid of the snails, but afraid of the implications. I have about 20 small cherry shrimps, 10 mid-sized Yamoto and 10 Cardinal Tetras.
Can anyone let advise if an addition of a puffer will be more beneficial or result in other problems in this situation?
Thanks.

And after it finishes off the snails, there goes your cherry shrimps![]()
Avoid puffers of any sort if you still want to keep your cherry shrimps alive. You can add more loaches but note that they will only go for snails when they are hungry (starve them for a week).
Snail population skyrockets whenever there is an absence of natural predators (loaches, puffers and even shrimps) or if there is abundant food (algae, rotting plants) for them. Cutting down algae can help reduce the number of snails in your tank.

Go for mini-puffer fish...They will clean yr entire tank rid of snails in 1 or 2 days. But after that, it is good to catch it out and isolate it. rear it with some blood worms, else in the main tank, it will start to nibble the tail fins of your fishes.
My office shares a mini-puffer. ie we bought 1 and share it with many people. therafter rear it in a small betta tank...![]()
Hi, Will you consider T-loan your mini Puffer?
I think it'll take about a week or so to wipe out the tiny snails in my tank. I do not know what to do with the Puffer after it have accomplished it's mission.
I do not want to rid the Puffer if I would have brought it. So, can T-loan?
Thanks.

How about clown loaches? I've read that they are voracious snail eaters.

yes, I too heard about clown loaches against snail, but haven't seen one in action. Puffer are the fastest and easiest, but they are often aggressive
According to me observation,
Puffer eats snail damn fast, a 2 ft tanks filled with 20 ++ snails should be wiped clean in a week.
I put my puffer in my planted tank, it takes worms but occassionally, if it gets agitated, it will "stunt" other fish with its venom. But most of the time, it gets along with the 40 other fish quite well.
Suggest u go for not more than 1. Once number of puffers increases, they tend to create havoc like gangster group.
i am also looking for puffers for my 4ft tank, hopefully can be dwarf type such that it will not be so fierce to attack my other fishes in the tank....alot of snails propagating everyday even i had maunally catch it everyday.....think at least 10 plus of snails which i catch everyday and throw into the bin....but still can stop the explosion...anyone can recommend shop that sell dwarf puff? or any other fish that can eat snails?
Ian from KF told me that sparkling gourami eats snails. I got some for my 4ft, in addition to the puffer that I already have.
After I removed the puffer, my snail population remained at zero. I have yet to see the sparkling gourami eat snails, but it is worth a try.
Unfortunately the gourami are rather small in size initially. It takes about a month or two to grow to about one-inch long.
That's all...
Yecch!
alamak....i had 2 croaking gourami...which i bought from KF too...he told me this wil eat the snail....but i think they are not eating at all....cos my snails population had been growing and growing.....i am now trying to get a puff or loach to control it....sigh
if you havea think enough moss in the tank, think the shrimps might survive a dwarf puffer in te same tank?
in fact i had got the puffer...and it is really very efficient in removing the snail populations..however now i need to isolate it as it keep on biting the tail or fin of my angels....sigh.....

What kind of puffer they have?
Are they the Figure-8 Puffer or the Dwarf Puffer?
Guys,
I've heard it's not advisable to keep clown loaches with the shrimps. I had two clown loaches in my shrimp tank and my shrimps kept disappearing. To be fair, I do not know if the loaches did it but now I'm not taking a risk putting them in with my shrimps.
Can anyone here please tell me different? My tank is also now infested with snails and want to get rid of them but not at the risk of losing my beloved shrimps.
Solution, guys???
TIA!!!
i guess mine is the figure 8 cos that time i am not able to search any shop selling mini puffers.....recently i noticed kingfisher and nature are selling mini.....
but till now i stilll isolate the puffer...and sometime will let it out when i notice some snail...
If its malayan trumpet snails, then I dun think any fish can effectively eliminate them. They have shells too thick for the puffer to crunch, and a hard protective lid thingy that allows them to resist being sucked out from their shells, plus they can also hide under the substrate. And every single one can lay fertile eggs.
Oh, the rare old Whale, mid storm and gale. In his ocean home will be. A giant in might, where might is right. And King of the boundless sea.
My clown loaches are voracious snail eaters..... I could observe them burying their head into the substrate for trumpet snails.
In a month time, hundreds of trumpet snails and ramshorn snails, almost disappeared...... I used to see a few hundred of them on the glass or on the driftwood at night/dawn.Now, after 6 months, none.... I see some empty shells here and there.
A point of note, they are destructive to plants.... They literally decimated my plants, uprooting them or "chewed" the stems.... I end up with a few surviving stalks of plants but no snails.
Now all of them are migrated to a cichlid based tank...lol. Only rocks.
