Just set up my new 3 ft x 1 ft x 1.5 ft tank 2 days ago. Trying to carpet with HC. Any advise/tips on planting HC to improve the success rate? Any advise on the run time for lights and CO2? Not sure if i'm doing it right. I anticipate 4-6 weeks for water to stabilise, or would it take longer? Should I add 2-3 fish to aid cycling?

    Currently maintaining@:
    • 25.5 degrees celsius [Hailea HS-28A Chiller]
    • 8 hours light [Green Element 24 x 3W LED]
    • 12 hours CO2@100 ppm (starts 2 hrs before light, and ends 2 hours after light)

    Looks good!

Cycling will typically take weeks. depending on how you start off the tank.

What soil was used? any seed bacteria? any Bacteria layer in the soil?

I would reduce the photo period to 8-10 hours. CO2 remain at 60-80ppm during the lights on.

At 100ppm, i don't think you want to introduce fishes.

If you are ok, i would like to comment on the scape.

The hard scape is great. i would remove the worts and the HM and the fern. Would also change the valis with tall hair grass. but thats my opinion.
if want some mid ground, perhaps some downoi or small crypts near the rocks cluster to contrast the HC.

The HC is spreading within 2 days, which is a good sign. Keep it up!!!!
I am balding but i am still young!

For your co2, you probably want to end 30-60mins before lights off instead of 2hours after lights off.

I started with 5 hours daily for my new tank and HC seems to grow well too, still on 5 hours 3 months into it. Did not want to change it since its working well.

Thanks for the advise and suggestion I have made the following adjustment.

    - Water change 50% twice a week
    - photo period of 8 hours
    - CO2 approx 70 bpm
    - CO2 start 1 hr before light, and end at same time as light
    - Removed and added some plants,
    - Started adding N-P-K supplements

    @Erctheanda
These are used when setting up the soil:
    - ADA Aquasoil Powder Amazonia
    - ADA Bacter 100
    - ADA Super Clear
    - ADA Tourmaline BC
    - ADA Penac P

I'm beginning to see some white hair forming on a few HC, are these algae? are they harmful? should it be removed? or leave as it is?

Hi Bro, Please do let me know if your HC is growing given your depth is 1.5ft with an EVO 24 x 3W LED.
I think the LUMEN not Watt of your LED might be far from enough. If you want to know more you can email me directly

I seen those on my HC during the initial setup period. They went away after a few weeks. Did you get tropica HC or the normal potted ones?

    Re: My new 3ft Tank

Hi Jason, I have a few questions if you don't mind regarding the Seiryu rocks you purchased from Mizuworld ... I would like to have an estimate of the $$$ to spend cause I also have a 3 feet tank :

    1) Do they charge for delivery ?
    2) The big piece on the right that is like jutting up in your tank is it a "L" sized rock ?
    3) How much estimated total did you spent on the rocks ... about $80 - $100 ?

    Thanks in advance

Seems it's initial stage of hair algae, it's common symptoms for newly tank setup, especially when ammonia is rising up.
Amano shrimps might help. Keep your co2 in premium level.

    (1) Yes, they charge a standard flat rate of approx $10-$15 for delivery

    (2) The biggest piece are specially requested from MizuWorld. They rate it XL size, approx $30-$35. It is triangular, angled to one side

    (3) Here's the prices of various sizes as displayed on their website:

    Large: http://mizuworld.com/product/detail/1340
